The Iron Mountain Railroad of Memphis[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The Iron Mountain Railroad Company of Memphis, herein called the Iron Mountain Railroad, is a single-track line, extending from Kansas Avenue to Calhoun Street. The property forms a link in the Union Railway of Memphis' belt line.

Introductory[edit]

The Iron Mountain Railroad is a corporation of Tennessee, having its corporate office at Memphis, Tenn., and its general administrative office at St. Louis, Mo. It is controlled by the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company through stock ownership. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation.

The property of this company was operated by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Company from August, 1890, the date of its completion to October 1, 1909, and by the Union Railway of Memphis from the latter date to December 31, 1917. From that date until date of valuation, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as a part of the operating unit of the Union Railway of Memphis.

The accounting records of the Iron Mountain Railroad were not opened until October 1, 1909. Certain information contained herein was obtained from the records of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Company and the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company, its successor.

Corporate History[edit]

The Iron Mountain Railroad was incorporated August 25, 1886, under the general laws of Tennessee, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railway within and around the city of Memphis and in Shelby County, Tenn.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The entire property, 1.081 miles of main line and 6.793 miles of yard and sidetracks, owned by the Iron Mountain Railroad on date of valuation was all acquired by construction which was done between August, 1886, and August, 1890, by The Missouri Pacific Railway Company, the principal predecessor of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property of the Iron Mountain Railroad is leased to the Union Railway of Memphis for an indefinite period from October 1, 1909. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ended December 31, 1917, are given in the chapter on leased railway property in the report on the Union Railway of Memphis.
