Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Laton and Western Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Laton and Western Railroad, is a single-track line, located entirely within the State of California and extending from Laton to Lanare, a distance of 17.569 miles.

Introductory

The Laton and Western Railroad is a corporation of the State of California, having its principal office at Los Angeles, Calif. It is controlled, through ownership of its entire capital stock except directors' shares, by the California, Arizona and Santa Fe, which acquired such control from individuals on June 26, 1916. The California, Arizona and Santa Fe is controlled, in turn, by the Santa Fe. On the other hand, the records reviewed indicate that the company itself does not control any other common-carrier corporation. The property of the Laton and Western Railroad has always been operated under lease by the Santa Fe.

Corporate History

The Laton and Western Railroad was incorporated August 8, 1910, under the general laws of the State of California.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The mileage owned by the Laton and Western Railroad, amounting to 17.569 miles, was constructed by or for it during the period from September, 1910, to 1912. The records reviewed do not indicate whether the construction was performed by the company's own forces or by others under contract.

Leased Railway Property

The entire property of the Laton and Western Railroad is leased to the Santa Fe under an agreement running five years from February, 1911, which has been extended to August 19, 1916. The terms of the lease are given in the section on leased railway property in the report on the Santa Fe.
