New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company, herein called the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad, is located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania and extends from Crawford Junction to Johnsonburg with a detached line extending from Brockwayville to Toby Mines together with several branches to coal mines, aggregating 45.251 miles of road with 20.428 miles of second main track. This property forms a part of the main line between Carrollton, N. Y., and Johnsonburg, Pa.

Introductory[edit]

The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad is a corporation of the State of Pennsylvania, having its principal office at Bradford, Pa. While the present name of this company is that given above, it was incorporated originally as the Wilcox and Howard Hill Improvement Company, which was later changed to the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company.

The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad is controlled indirectly by the Erie, by virtue of its control of the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company, the company that owns the majority of the outstanding capital stock of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad. The records do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation.

The property of the company was operated by its own organization from the date the first section of its road was placed in operation, 1882, until July 1, 1890. From that date until November 30, 1895, the property was operated by The New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company and its receivers, and from the latter date to December 31, 1917, it was operated by the Erie. The property of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration on January 1, 1918, as a part of the system of the Erie and it is so operated on date of valuation.

Corporate History[edit]

The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was incorporated April 8, 1870, under special act of the State of Pennsylvania, as the Wilcox and Howard Hill Improvement Company for the purpose of holding lands and constructing and operating a railroad or railroads leading from any lands held by it to a connection with other railroads. On June 25, 1881, the name of the Wilcox and Howard Hill Improvement Company was changed to the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company. The date of organization of the company was October 25, 1870.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad, 45.251 miles, was all acquired by construction. The years when the various portions of the line were constructed are indicated in the following statement:

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The property of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was solely operated by the Erie and its predecessors under lease from July 1, 1890, to December 31, 1917. From January 1, 1918, to date of valuation the property has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the system of the Erie.
