Norway Branch Railroad[edit]

Norway Branch Railroad Company, herein called the Norway Branch Railroad, situated entirely within the State of Maine, extending from Norway to South Paris, 1.432 miles.

The Norway Branch Railroad is a corporation of the State of Maine, having its principal office at Norway, Me. It was incorporated April 23, 1879, under the general laws of that State. The accounting records of this company were not obtained. Therefore, no information can be given from its accounts regarding financial dealings or investments. However, certain data given below were obtained from reports filed with this commission and from other records. The company is controlled by the town of Norway, Me., through ownership of a majority of the outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation.

The railroad of this company consists of 1.432 miles of single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad extending from a connection with the tracks of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company at South Paris to Norway, all in the State of Maine. It also owns 0.542 mile of yard tracks and sidings. This property was constructed under an agreement, dated October 6, 1879, with the Grand Trunk, under the terms of which the Norway Branch Railroad agreed to provide right of way and station grounds and pay the Grand Trunk $7,000 for constructing the road. It further provided for the Grand Trunk to obtain a lease of the property when constructed. The property has been operated by the carrier since completion.

The entire property of the Norway Branch Railroad is operated by the carrier under lease agreement dated May 1, 1880, effective January 1, 1880, for a term of 99 years for a nominal rental payment of $1 per annum, all taxes, and maintenance.
