The Ohio Connecting Railway[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The Ohio Connecting Railway Company, herein called the Ohio Connecting Railway, is a standard-gauge railroad, located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania. A line owned at Pittsburgh, including a bridge owned across the Ohio River, connects the lines of The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway Company and the Panhandle. A branch line extends from Pittsburgh through Duff and Scully to Lewis Run Junction, where connection is again made with the line of the Panhandle. Of this branch, the portion between Duff Junction and Lewis Run Junction is located on the right of way of the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railway Company and with the line of the latter is used as a double-track railway. The Ohio Connecting Railway owns a total of 9.149 miles of first main tracks, 5.265 miles of second main track and 31.407 miles of yard and side tracks. Its road thus embraces 45.821 miles of all tracks. All of the property owned by the Ohio Connecting Railway is operated by other carriers.

Corporate History[edit]

The Ohio Connecting Railway was incorporated November 20, 1886, under the general laws of Pennsylvania, for the purpose of constructing a railroad extending from a connection with the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway Company, at Carnegie, Pa., across the Ohio River to New Brighton, Pa. By an act of Congress, May 14, 1888, it was authorized to construct a bridge over the Ohio River at Pittsburgh, Pa. The principal office of the Ohio Connecting Railway is located at Pittsburgh, Pa.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The construction of the property of the Ohio Connecting Railway was begun In February, 1889, and the bridge across the Ohio River, together with all of Its tracks, with the exception of the branch line from Duff Junction to Lewis Run Junction, were opened for operation during the period from October 20, 1890, to 1902. The branch line referred to, located on right of way owned by the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railway Company, was opened for operation on June 5, 1905.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

On date of valuation, the common-carrier property of the Ohio Connecting Railway, with the exception of its tracks extending from Duff Junction to Lewis Run Junction, about 3.18 miles, was solely operated by the Panhandle under an agreement of December 30, 1905. The tracks of the Ohio Connecting Railway, between Duff Junction and Lewis Run Junction are located on the right of way of the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railway Company, and are operated jointly by the Panhandle and the Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny Railway Company, with the road of the last-named company, as a double-track system, under an agreement of February 1, 1905.
