Ohio and Little Kanawha Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Ohio and Little Kanawha, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Ohio and extends from Fair Oaks (Zanesville) to West Marietta, a distance of 71.931 miles.

Introductory[edit]

The Ohio and Little Kanawha is a corporation of West Virginia, having its principal office at Newark, Ohio. It is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of its outstanding capital stock. The records do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any other common-carrier corporation. The property of this company was operated from March 1, 1900, to December 31, 1917, by the Baltimore and Ohio. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History[edit]

The Ohio and Little Kanawha was incorporated January 8, 1900, under the general laws of West Virginia, for the purpose of acquiring the property, rights, and franchises of The Zanesville and Ohio River Railway Company.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The recorded owned mileage of the Ohio and Little Kanawha, 73.45 miles, was acquired in part by purchase and in part by construction. The company acquired, by purchase from the Zanesville and Ohio River Railway Company, 71.96 miles of road between Zanesville and Harmar, Ohio, which had been constructed by that company between 1885 and 1888. The Ohio and Little Kanawha constructed 0.10 mile of track at West Marietta, Ohio, and 1.52 miles of track at Zanesville, Ohio, and reduced the mileage owned 0.13 mile by remeasurements and reclassification. The inventoried mileage is 71.931.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio, as stated in the report on that company.

Predecessor Company[edit]

The Zanesville and Ohio River Railway, Formerly Named The Chicago, Zanesville and Atlantic Railway, Originally Named The Zanesville, McConnellsville and Pomeroy Railway[edit]

This company was incorporated June 15, 1883, under the general laws of Ohio. The records reviewed do not indicate whether this company was controlled by any individual or corporation on February 26, 1900, the date of sale, nor whether it then controlled any common-carrier corporation. The property of the company was operated by its own organization from January 1, 1887, date of completion, to July 19, 1892, and from that date to date of sale by a receiver. Although the property was conveyed to the Ohio and Little Kanawha Railroad Company on February 26, 1900, the results of corporate operations to February 28, 1900, are recorded in the books of the company. The railroad owned was a standard-gage, steam railroad, from Zanesville to Harmer, Ohio, 71.96 miles. The company originally constructed 74.24 miles from December 1885 to July 1888, of which 2.28 miles were reclassified, leaving 71.96 miles on date of sale.
