Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of The Oswego and Syracuse Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Oswego and Syracuse, is located within the State of New York and extends from Syracuse to Oswego with a branch line in Oswego. It is a single-track line with the exception of 0.322 mile of other main tracks and aggregates 35.526 miles of road.

Introductory

The Oswego and Syracuse is a corporation of the State of New York, having its principal office at New York, N. Y. The accounting records of the Oswego and Syracuse for the period from date of organization to March 1, 1869, were incomplete. Therefore, only partial information can be given from the accounts regarding its financial dealings or investments. The records reviewed do not indicate that the company is controlled by any individual or corporation, nor, on the other hand, that it controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Oswego and Syracuse was operated by its own organization from October 16, 1848, to March 1, 1869; by the Lackawanna from March 1, 1869, to December 31, 1917, and by the United States Railroad Administration from that date to date of valuation as a part of the operating unit of the Lackawanna.

Corporate History

The Oswego and Syracuse was incorporated April 29, 1839, by special act of the State of New York. It was organized on March 25, 1847.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned mileage of the Oswego and Syracuse, amounting to 35.526 miles, and consisting of a main line from Oswego to Syracuse, N. Y., 34.503 miles, with 1.023 miles of branch line in Oswego, was acquired by construction during the years 1847 and 1848.

Leased Railway Property

The entire property of the Oswego and Syracuse is leased to the Lackawanna in perpetuity from March 1, 1869. The terms of the lease and rental accrued for the year ended December 31, 1917, are given in the chapter on leased railway property of the report of the Lackawanna.
