Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City Railroad Company, herein called the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, situated in the States of Missouri and Illinois. The owned mileage extends from West Quincy to North Kansas City, 244.316 miles, all in Missouri. The property in Illinois consists of a freight house and tracks at Quincy. Trackage rights granted by the Burlington afford access to Kansas City, Mo., and Quincy, Ill. The Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City leases 0.379 mile of yard tracks and sidings at Quincy to the Wabash Railway Company for sole operation. It wholly owns and uses 279.947 miles of all tracks and wholly owns but does not use 0.379 mile, which are distributed by States in the trackage table in Appendix 1.

Introductory[edit]

The Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City is a corporation of the State of Missouri, having its principal office at Kansas City, Mo. It is controlled by the Burlington through ownership of a majority of the capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any other common-carrier corporation. The property was operated by the Omaha, Kansas City and Eastern Railroad Company, under lease, from the dates acquired to January 22, 1902, and the results of corporate operations for that period are included in the income and profit and loss accounts of that company. From January 22, 1902, to date of valuation the property has been operated by the company's own organization.

Corporate History[edit]

The Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City was incorporated June 1, 1897, under the general laws of the State of Missouri, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from a point on the bank of the Mississippi River opposite Quincy, Ill., to Trenton, Mo. The date of organization was not determined. Pursuant to this purpose, the company acquired the property, rights, and franchises of the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City Railway Company and subsequently acquired the Omaha, Kansas City & Eastern Railroad Company and the Kansas City, Peoria & Chicago Railway Company. The company, itself, and these corporations, together with their predecessors, total seven different corporations and comprise the line of succession culminating in the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City as at present constituted. The following chart shows the names of the corporations, the respective dates of incorporation, and for each predecessor the date of succession, the immediately succeeding corporation and the manner of succession. Reference to each of these corporations is made in the last column by its respective number shown in the first column.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The road owned, 244.316 miles, was acquired partly by construction and partly by purchase. Of the six corporations which comprise the line of succession culminating in the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City as at present constituted, one corporation, The Northern Railroad Company, did not construct or improve any property. Of the five other corporations, one, the Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City Railway Company, only improved property completed by others, and one, the Kansas City, Peoria & Chicago Railway Company, only acquired property from a predecessor, but has no records to show whether it improved the property while it owned it. The data with respect to the mileage constructed by the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City, itself, and the three remaining corporations, the years in which the various portions of the line were constructed, and the manner in which the property was acquired are indicated in the following table, wherein to facilitate comparison with the table showing corporate succession, previously given, the same order of corporations is maintained.
