The railroad of the Raleigh and Charleston Railroad Company, herein called the Raleigh and Charleston, is a single-track, standard gage, steam railroad, located in North Carolina and South Carolina. The main line extends southwesterly from Lumberton, N. C., to Marion, S. C., s distance of 42.584 miles. This company also owns 5.209 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 47.793 miles of all tracks owned and used, classified by States in the trackage table in Appendix 1. The Raleigh and Charleston is controlled by the Seaboard and forms an important part of the latter's system.

- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The owned mileage of the Raleigh and Charleston, 42.584 miles, was acquired through reorganization and construction. The main line from Lumberton, N. C., to Marion, S. C., was acquired February 1, 1906, through reorganization from the Carolina Northern Railroad Company, which had constructed the property between July 1, 1899, and December 1, 1901. A spur from Marion, S. C., to the property of the Wisconsin-Carolina Lumber Company, was constructed by the Raleigh and Charleston in 1908.
