The railroad of The Sewell Valley Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the southeastern part of West Virginia. The owned mileage extends northeastwardly from Meadow Creek to Rainelle, a distance of 21.038 miles.

The railroad of the Loop & Lookout Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Loop & Lookout, which is leased to and operated by the carrier, is a single-track line extending northwardly from Rainelle to Nallen, a distance of 18.686 miles. The Loop & Lookout also owns yard and side tracks as shown in the trackage table in Appendix 1.

The carrier wholly owns and uses 22.985 miles of all tracks, and uses but does not own 19.644 miles of all tracks, which are classified in the trackage table in Appendix 1.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated November 22, 1907, under the general laws of the State of West Virginia. The date of its organization was February 27, 1908.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, amounting to 21.038 miles, extending from Meadow Creek to Dyer, W. Va., was acquired by construction which was begun during June, 1908, and completed on September 1, 1910. The road was constructed by the forces of the company under the supervision of the Meadow River Lumber Company.

The mileage owned by the Loop & Lookout, 18.97 miles, was all acquired by construction, performed by the forces of the company under the supervision of the Meadow River Lumber Company. The portion of the line between Dyer and Burdetts Creek, W. Va., 12 miles, was constructed during the period December, 1908 to 1911, and that portion between Burdetts Creek and Wilderness, W. Va., 6.97 miles, was constructed during the period October, 1915 to March 6, 1916.
