The railroad of the South Pacific Coast Railway Company, hereinafter called the South Pacific Coast Railway, is located within the State of California and consists of 93.291 miles of first main, 8.449 miles of second main, 1.942 miles of third main, and 1.942 miles of fourth main tracks. The steam lines owned by this company extend from Elmhurst to Santa Clara, College Park to Santa Cruz, with branches from Campbell to New Almaden and Felton to Boulder Creek. The electric lines extend from Alameda Pier to Oakland and through the city of Alameda. This company also owns jointly with the Central Pacific 0.176 undivided mile of first main and 0.037 undivided mile of second main tracks with an important drawbridge across San Antonio Estuary at Oakland, as hereinbefore mentioned.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The recorded mileage owned by the South Pacific Coast Railway amounts to 96.70 miles, of which 5.12 miles was acquired by construction, and 98.80 miles by consolidation, less 7.22 miles sold or abandoned. The inventoried mileage is 93.291 miles. The entire 98.80 miles acquired in the consolidation of May 23, 1887, was acquired from the seven predecessor corporations which had constructed it, as follows: The Santa Cruz and Felton Rail Road Company 7.80 miles, South Pacific Coast Railroad Company 45.30 miles, Bay and Coast Railroad Company 25.20 miles, Oakland Township Railroad Company 0.90 mile, San Francisco and Colorado River Railroad Company 2.60 miles, Felton and Pescadero Railroad Company 7.40 miles, and Almaden Branch Railroad Company 9.60 miles. The details regarding construction of the road are given in the accounting report.

In addition, the South Pacific Coast Railway owns jointly with the Central Pacific a bridge across Oakland harbor, with 0.176 mile of road. The details of the construction of this bridge and mileage were not determined.

All of the railroad acquired by the South Pacific Coast Railway in the consolidation of 1887 was narrow gage. During the years 1906 and 1907 the gage was changed to standard.
