The St. Clairsville and Northern Railway[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The St. Clairsville and Northern Railway (trustees), hereinafter called the St. Clairsville and Northern, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Ohio and extends from "BN" Tower (Barton) to St. Clairsville, a distance of 3.421 miles.

Introductory[edit]

No accounting or other records, except some data relating to the cost of land, of the St. Clairsville and Northern were obtained. Therefore, no information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. However, certain data indicated below were obtained from the records of the lessees of the property and from other sources.

The St. Clairsville and Northern is a creation of the State of Ohio, having its principal office at St. Clairsville, Ohio. The records reviewed indicate that the St. Clairsville and Northern is controlled by the Village of St. Clairsville, Ohio. The records do not indicate that the St. Clairsville and Northern, itself, controls any other common-carrier corporation.

The property of the St. Clairsville and Northern was operated from June 15, 1882, to May 5, 1903, by The St. Clairsville Company, from May 5, 1903, to June 30, 1909, by The Cleveland, Lorain and Wheeling Railway Company, and from July 1, 1909, to December 31, 1917, by the Baltimore and Ohio. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History[edit]

The St. Clairsville and Northern was formed under a special act of the Legislature of Ohio of June 17, 1879, which authorized the village of St. Clairsville. Ohio, to build a railroad to extend from St. Clairsville to St. Clairsville Junction, Ohio, and to operate or lease the road. The village voted to act under the law and the Common Pleas Court of Belmont County, Ohio, appointed trustees to manage the affairs of the St. Clairsville and Northern in behalf of the village.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The road owned, 3.42 miles, was acquired by construction: 3.33 miles from St. Clairsville to St. Clairsville Junction, Ohio, between July 6, 1880, and November 14, 1881; 0.57 mile of new connection at St. Clairsville Junction, Ohio, in 1903; and 0.03 mile of extension at St. Clairsville, Ohio, date not given. These mileages were increased by 0.04 mile due to rebuilding after washouts and reduced 0.55 mile by old connection at St. Clairsville Junction, Ohio, taken up in 1905. The inventoried mileage is 3.42 miles.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio for a term of 90 years from May 5, 1903, as stated in the report on that company.
