The railroad of the St. Louis and Ohio River Railroad, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in southwestern Illinois. The main line extends southeasterly from East St. Louis to near Belleville, a distance of 13.092 miles. The carrier also owns 3.742 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 16.834 miles of all tracks owned. The carrier operates all of this mileage with the exception of 1.535 miles of main track and 2.595 miles of yard tracks and sidings located at East St. Louis, which is leased to the Alton and Southern Railroad.

The carrier has trackage rights over 1.37 miles of road owned by the Alton and Southern Railroad at East St. Louis, Ill. On the other hand, it grants trackage rights to the Illinois Central Railroad Company over 1.47 miles of track at Belleville, Ill.

The railroad is operated for freight service only, its principal tonnage being coal from mines along its route. The carrier is controlled by the Aluminum Company of America.
