St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line Railroad Company, herein called the St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, in two sections, both located in Iowa. One section extends from Clear Lake Junction to Des Moines and the other from Carlisle to Allerton. The two sections are connected by the line of the carrier extending from Des Moines to Carlisle.

Corporate History[edit]

The St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line was incorporated February 18, 1911, under the general laws of Iowa. It was organized in the interest of the carrier, by which it is controlled through ownership of its entire capital stock, for the purpose of acquiring the property of the St. Paul and Des Moines Railroad Company, and of constructing a connection between it and the carrier's line to Kansas City. The property, rights, and franchises of the St. Paul and Des Moines Railroad Company were acquired August 9, 1911, embracing 115 miles of road between Clear Lake Junction and East Des Moines. On May 19, 1911, the St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line had purchased 3 miles of road, from Des Moines to East Des Moines, formerly part of the Des Moines Western Railway Company. From 1911 to 1913, inclusive, the St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line constructed 65 miles of main line between Carlisle and Allerton, and various spurs aggregating 10 miles. The St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line operated the Winterset and the Indianola branches of the carrier under lease from July 1 to November 1, 1913. On the latter date all the property of the St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line was leased to the carrier for a period of 99 years.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

All of the property and rights of the St. Paul and Kansas City Short Line are leased to the carrier for sole operation for a period of 99 years from November 1, 1913. In accordance with this lease the carrier pays as rental a sum equal to the interest on the outstanding funded debt and pays all operating expenses and taxes.
