Suncook Valley Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of Suncook Valley Railroad is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, situated entirely within the State of New Hampshire and extending from Pittsfield to Suncook, 17.674 miles. The Suncook Valley Railroad also owns 3.072 miles of yard tracks and sidings, a total of 20.746 miles of all tracks. This property is operated by the carrier as lessee through the Concord & Montreal.

Corporate History[edit]

The Suncook Valley Railroad was incorporated under a special act of New Hampshire of July 1, 1863, amended July 6, 1866, and June 29, 1870, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad between the points named above. Its principal office is at Manchester, N. H.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The construction of the Suncook Valley Railroad's property was begun in the summer of 1869, and completed on January 1, 1870. The grading and masonry were done under contract with Nathaniel Head, a director of the company, and all other work, including the furnishing of material, was done by the Concord Railroad Corporation.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The property of the Suncook Valley Railroad was leased to the Concord & Montreal for a period of two years from January 1, 1912, at an annual rental of 3 per cent on the capital stock, or $10,251, and organization expenses, $300. The lessee is obligated to maintain the property and pay all taxes. The lease was extended to January 1, 1916. The property is operated by the carrier as lessee through the Concord & Montreal.
