The railroad of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of Arizona. Its main line extends from Gila Bend in a southerly direction to Ajo, a distance of 44.327 miles. The carrier also owns 3.310 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 47.637 miles of all tracks owned.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated May 18, 1915, for a period of 50 years under the general laws of the State of Arizona, for the purpose of constructing, owning, and operating a railroad and appurtenances from a point at or near Gila Bend, Maricopa County, southerly, to a point at or near Ajo, Pima County, a distance of approximately 45 miles, thence in an easterly direction to a point at or near Tucson, a distance of approximately 130 miles, with such branches and spurs as were deemed necessary; and to extend such line or lines to any other point or points within or without the said State. The date of organization of the carrier was May 24, 1915.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, 44.33 miles, has been acquired by construction. Work was commenced July 29, 1915, and the road was placed in operation February 20, 1916. Track surfacing was unfinished at the latter date, but was completed about April, 1916. In the construction of the road, all branches of the work were done by various independent contractors under general supervision of the forces of the carrier.
