The railroad of The Wabash, Chester and Western Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in southwestern Illinois. The main line extends northeasterly from Menard, near Chester, to Mount Vernon, a distance of 64.811 miles. The carrier also owns 6.806 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 71.617 miles of all tracks wholly owned and used.
- 1. The Wabash, Chester and Western Railroad Company. Under general laws of Illinois, Feb. 20, 1878.
- 2. The Iron Mountain, Chester and Eastern Railroad Company. Incorporated as a consolidation of 3 and 4, about July 24, 1873; no other information obtained. Sold at foreclosure Feb. 28, 1878, after receivership begun some time in 1876, and terminated Mar. 31, 1878; acquired Mar. 29, 1878, by 1.
- 3. Chester and Iron Mountain Railroad Company. Under a Missouri charter, the date or its provisions not determined. Consolidated July 24, 1873, with 4 to form 2.
- 4. The Chester and Tamaroa Coal and Railroad Company. By special act of Illinois, approved May 4, 1869. Consolidated July 24, 1873, with 3 to form 2.
- 5. Chester and Kaskaskia Railroad Company. Under general laws of Illinois, Oct. 25, 1877. Sold to 1, Mar. 29, 1878.
- 6. Tamaroa and Mt. Vernon Railway Company. Under general laws of Illinois, Sept. 4, 1891. Sold to 1, Dec. 23, 1892.
