The Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway Company, herein called the Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway, is a single-track line located entirely within the State of Ohio and extending southwesterly from Dundas to Jackson, a distance of 16.956 miles.

Introductory[edit]

The Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway is a corporation of the State of Ohio, having its principal office at Columbus, Ohio. It is controlled by the carrier [Hocking Valley Railway] through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway was operated by The Columbus, Hocking Valley and Toledo Railway Company and the receiver of that company from the date the property was placed in operation, March 1, 1896, until March 1, 1899. From the latter date to date of valuation the property has been operated by the carrier.

Corporate History[edit]

The Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway was incorporated January 22, 1895, under the general laws of the State of Ohio, for the purpose of constructing, owning, and acquiring a railroad from McArthur Junction (now Dundas) to Jackson, Ohio. The date of organization was January 22, 1895.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway, extending from Dundas to Jackson, Ohio, a distance of 16.956 miles, was acquired by construction during 1895 and 1896. The grading was done by John M. Lally, contractor. The records reviewed do not indicate whether the remainder of the construction work was performed under contract or by company forces. There is a difference of 0.304 mile between the mileage, 17.26 miles, recorded by the company, and the mileage, 16.956 miles, inventoried as of date of valuation.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property of the Wellston and Jackson Belt Railway is leased to the carrier for a term of 98 years from January 1, 1901, to January 1, 1999. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ending on date of valuation are given in the chapter on leased railway property in the report on the carrier.
