The West Clarion Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The West Clarion Railroad Company, herein called the West Clarion Railroad, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania and extends from Brockwayville to West Clarion, 2.646 miles.

Introductory[edit]

The West Clarion Railroad is a corporation of the State of Pennsylvania, having its principal office at Bradford, Pa. No general accounting records of the company were obtained. Therefore, no information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. However, certain data indicated hereinafter were obtained from a balance sheet statement as of date of valuation, certified by the comptroller of the company, filed with us, and from other sources.

The West Clarion Railroad is controlled indirectly by the Erie, by virtue of its control of the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company of Erie, Pa., the company that owns the entire outstanding capital stock of the West Clarion Railroad. The records reviewed do not indicate that the West Clarion Railroad controls any common-carrier corporation.

The property of the West Clarion Railroad was operated by the Erie from the date it was opened for operation about 1898, to December 31, 1917. The common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration on January 1, 1918, as part of the system of the Erie, and it is so operated on date of valuation.

Corporate History[edit]

The West Clarion Railroad was incorporated July 21, 1897, under the general laws of Pennsylvania to construct and operate a railroad from Brockwayville to Snyder, Jefferson County, Pa. The date of its organization was December 6, 1897.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the West Clarion Railroad, 2.646 miles, was constructed by the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company for the West Clarion Railroad about 1898. There is a difference of 0.010 mile, between the mileage recorded by this company, 2.656 miles, and the mileage, 2.646 miles, inventoried as of date of valuation.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The common-carrier property of the West Clarion Railroad is operated on date of valuation by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the system of the Erie. Details with respect to the operation of this property are given in the chapter on leased railway property in the report on the Erie.
