The carrier owns two railroad bridges crossing the Cape Fear and the North East Cape Fear Rivers, together with 2.518 miles of single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, extending from Hilton to Navassa, in the southeastern part of North Carolina, and providing a means of approach to Wilmington, N. C. It also owns 1.045 miles of yard tracks and sidings. The road thus embraces 3.563 miles of all tracks owned but not used. The carrier is jointly controlled by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company and the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company, and its entire common-carrier property is used jointly under lease by these two carriers.


The property of the carrier has always been operated jointly by the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line, or the predecessors of those companies.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated June 23, 1866, by special ordinance of the Legislature of the State of North Carolina, for the stated purpose of establishing a connection between the railroads of three companies in whose interests the carrier was incorporated. These companies comprised the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad Company, Wilmington & Manchester Railroad Company, and the Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherfordton Railroad Company. The first two companies named are predecessors of the Atlantic Coast Line; the last named is a predecessor of the Seaboard Air Line. The date of organization was August 25, 1866.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, extending from Navassa to Hilton, N. C., 2.518 miles, was constructed under contract by W. Bollman during the period from 1867 to November 1, 1869.
