Wyoming & Northwestern Railway Company[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of the Wyoming & Northwestern Railway Company, herein called the Wyoming & Northwestern, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in the central part of Wyoming. Its main line extends from Casper in a westerly direction to Lander, 148.008 miles. The Wyoming & Northwestern also wholly owns 32.183 miles of standard-gauge and 0.225 mile of three-rail yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 180.416 miles of all tracks wholly owned. In addition, it owns 0.342 undivided mile of yard tracks and sidings jointly and equally with another carrier.

Introductory[edit]

The Wyoming & Northwestern is a corporation of the State of Wyoming, having its corporate office at Casper, Wyo., and its general administrative office at Chicago, Ill. It is controlled by the North Western, through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Wyoming & Northwestern has been operated by its own organization during its entire life.

Corporate History[edit]

The Wyoming & Northwestern was incorporated November 12, 1904, under the general laws of the State of Wyoming, for the purpose of constructing and operating a line of road from a point at or near Casper to Lander, Wyo. The date of its organization was November 30, 1904. The Wyoming & Northwestern had but one predecessor, the Wyoming State Railway Company, which was incorporated March 31, 1904, in the State of Wyoming, and whose rights, franchises, maps, and surveys were acquired by the Wyoming & Northwestern. The actual date of acquisition was not obtained.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the Wyoming & Northwestern, 148.008 miles, was all acquired by construction. The years when the portions of the line were constructed are indicated in the following statement:

In the construction of the road, all work was performed by the forces of the North Western, or under its supervision.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The Wyoming & Northwestern uses jointly with the North Western on date of valuation 2.28 miles of tracks, engine houses, and station facilities owned by the latter at Casper, Wyo. The term is five years from March 20, 1917, and the stipulated annual payment is 10 per cent of 4 per cent on a valuation of $157,290, plus 10 per cent of maintenance and operation, with an allowance of 10 per cent for joint-facility revenue. The rental accrued and charged to income for the year ending on date of valuation is $629.16.

Predecessor Company[edit]

Wyoming State Railway Company[edit]

This company was incorporated March 31, 1904, in the State of Wyoming. No accounting records of the company were obtained. Therefore, no information can be given from its accounts regarding financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. However, certain data were obtained from other sources. The records reviewed do not indicate whether the company was controlled by any individual or corporation on April 6, 1908, the date of dissolution, nor, on the other hand, whether it then controlled any common-carrier corporation.

The company did not own any completed railroad property. Its rights and franchises together with maps, surveys, etc., were acquired by the Wyoming & Northwestern and the corporation was dissolved April 6, 1908.
