The railroad of Yosemite Valley Railroad Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in the central part of California. The owned mileage extends northwesterly from Merced to El Portal, Calif., 78.433 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 10.265 miles. Its road thus embraces 88.698 miles of all tracks owned.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated December 18, 1902, under the general laws of the State of California, for a period of 50 years. The incorporators, five in number, represented Frank G. Drum, Thomas Prather, and William W. Garthwaite, of San Francisco, Calif. The purpose for which the carrier was incorporated was to afford access by rail to the Yosemite Valley, which had previously been reached only by staging 70 or 80 miles over the mountains. The date of organization was December 18, 1902. The principal office is located at San Francisco. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.
