Youghiogheny Northern Railway[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of The Youghiogheny Northern Railway Company, herein called the Youghiogheny Northern, is a single-track branch line located within the State of Pennsylvania, and extends from a junction with the Broadford branch of the Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Youghiogheny at Broadford northerly to Summit, a distance of 2.008 miles.

Introductory[edit]

The Youghiogheny Northern is a corporation of the State of Pennsylvania, having its principal office at Pittsburgh, Pa. It is controlled by the United States Steel Corporation through ownership of more than a majority of its capital stock. On the other hand, the records do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Youghiogheny Northern has always been operated by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie.

Corporate History[edit]

The Youghiogheny Northern was incorporated August 16, 1881, under the general laws of the State of Pennsylvania for the purpose of constructing a railroad from Youghiogheny River near Broadford to Tintsman, about 4.5 miles. The date of organization was not determined.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the Youghiogheny Northern, extending from Broadford Junction to Summit, a distance of 2.008 miles, was acquired by purchase from H. C. Frick Coke Company on May 15, 1883. The records reviewed did not indicate when this property was constructed, but the road was placed in operation by the Youghiogheny Northern on October 1, 1883.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property of the Youghiogheny Northern is leased to the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie for a term of 50 years from April 1, 1883. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ending on date of valuation are given in the chapter on leased railway property of the report on the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie.
