What is a woman? How can we think about gender's linkage to power, race, class, ability, and difference? And what does any of this have to do with feminism? Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has a vibrant relationship with Black feminism, Black trans studies, and queer of color critique in the US and transnationally. This course will examine these questions through an introduction to the transdisciplinary field of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Students will examine canonical texts concentrating on theories and interventions in women's studies by people of African descent. Course materials will include academic articles, blog posts, and multimedia (films, music, etc.). No prior knowledge of subject material is required; however, the course will depend upon the student's ongoing development of critical writing, reading, and thinking skills.

An entire body of research supports Wikipedia, the largest free online encyclopedia, however, it is overwhelmingly edited by men. When it comes to Black feminist histories epistemic silences are only compounded. As a class we will add legitimate sources and well-cited information to democratize the intellectual history of Black women intellectuals. This is an opportunity to share our reading and discussions with an international audience. Due to time constraints in our semester the class will focus on improving already existing Wikipedia articles with additional words, citations, and new information. We will work together through a class dashboard to edit entries on Black feminist intellectual history that were covered in the first two units of the class. More detailed instructions will be circulated in the weeks before this assignment.
