Assignment - Basic Wikipedia training modules

These are the Wiki Ed produced training modules that I believe are important and relevant to our work in this rotation.  You are expected to complete all of them by the end of your lunch break on Day 1 of the course.

Assignment - Editing Wikipedia as a health-professional student

These are additional training modules that are especially relevant to you as medical students.  You are expected to complete these before you go to sleep at the end of Day 1 of the course.

Assignment - How to assign yourself an article for this course
Guide(s) for writing articles in your topic area

Medicine

Assignment - Workplan

By 9:30am on Mon 11/29 (e.g. before our first WP-WIP), post your final Workplan to your selected Wikipedia's talk page, so that you can engage with the Wikipedian community members who are interested & actively following your article.  If you are working on a team, I want you to be explicit about what section(s) you will individually be responsible for.

Consider explicitly declaring any/all of the following (but don't feel limited to these):

  • Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
  • Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
  • Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
  • Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
  • Which sections will you prioritize?
  • What resources do you intend to look up, and when?
  • How will you decide what things (signs, symptoms, side-effects, etc.) to explicitly include? To explicitly exclude?
  • Will you also embed additional links to other Wiki pages?
  • How will you ensure you avoid "doctor-speak" and not use jargon?

A month-long rotation may feel like a long time, but it's remarkably short for this kind of work!  I expect each of you will have begun making edits live on Wikipedia (e.g. not merely in your sandboxes) before the end of this week.

Assignment - Peer review an article

Guiding framework

Please perform peer reviews beginning on Wed 12/8 after our WIP#3

  • What should a peer-review look like? Here's our suggested plan:
  • Peer review of Nov-Dec 2021:
    • Break it up into major and minor content comments
    • Major = overall impressions-- did they achieve their objectives
      • So maybe read their work plan before you conduct your peer-review
    • Rephrase or summarize the contribution of the author's work
    • Comment on whether the depth is appropriate? overly abstract?
    • Look at structure, content, clarity, cohesiveness, scope
    • Citations: are there enough/appropriate type? cited properly?
    • Read all of it but focus (especially) on the contributions of your peer
    • Assume good intent
    • Be nice in the way you phrase your peer-review
    • Don't just give "Good job" positive feedback-- deltas are GOOD
    • Suggestions for next steps
  • Logistical Details:

    • Peer reviews are DUE by end of week 3 = Before you go to sleep on Mon 12/13.
    • Post the peer-review on the TALK page of the article you are reviewing.
  • Here's a link to a wikipedia peer-review rubric offered by Wiki Ed for evaluating student contributions to Wikipedia articles.  While we will NOT formally use the point system, it does provide a nice complement to our "home-grown" peer-review process.

Assignment - Continue improving your article

Exercise

Add links to your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

Week 4

Course meetings
Tuesday, 14 December 2021   |   Friday, 17 December 2021
Milestones

BEFORE we start our WP-WIP #4 on Tues 12/14 @ 10am, ALL peer-reviews should have been completed and posted to the talk page of the page being reviewed.

In class - WP-WIP #4
Mon 12/13 @ 1-2pm OR Tues 12/14 @ 4-5pm

You will informally present your work-in-progress to Amin and classmates.  We will help troubleshoot or discuss your evolving thoughts on your work.

If you'll miss this WP-WIP, here's the gDoc for your progress reports.
Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

How to respond to the peer-reviewer's comments?

  • Be civil
  • When you disagree explain why

Logistical Details:

  • Post your responses to peer-review on the TALK page near the peer review.
  • This will allow other Wikipedians to engage with the recommendations long after you finish this course

Assignment - Polish your work

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

In class - WP-Wrap-up Session
Fri 12/17 @ 10 - 11

On Fri 12/17 @ 10 - 11 we will convene for a meeting to share accomplishments and discuss lessons learned. Final presentations will be structured as follows: round robin "reports" (maximum of 10 minutes each) from each of you as follows:

  • What did I accomplish this month (broad overview)?
  • What did I learn?
  • What will I take forward with me into the future?
  • Now in hindsight, is there anything I would have done differently?

Here's a link to the google doc for this Wrap-up Session.
