The distribution of environmental contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems is controlled by abiotic and biotic factors that can vary substantially among ecosystems and make the consequences of contaminant exposure difficult to predict. The purpose of this course is for students to develop a strong conceptual framework for understanding how environmental loading of contaminants leads to exposure and adverse effects for wildlife and/or people. Students in this course will achieve an understanding of (a) the major contaminant classes, (b) contaminant sources, fate, and biogeochemistry, (c) the mechanisms of toxicity, and (d) the population, community, and ecosystem responses to contaminants.
