Language in Advertising (LING 2151) satisfies a humanities general education requirement at the University of New Mexico, and the course provides a survey of linguistics topics in the context of language in advertising (broadly construed). The course is also an ECURE (expanded course-based undergraduate research experience), and research appears in the course in three ways: (1) Students acquire knowledge of the scientific process through conducting mini research projects; (2) Students use existing research to develop a client pitch which is evidence-based; and (3) Students use existing research to represent knowledge through Wikipedia contributions.

Students will learn to read linguistics research articles and apply the content towards smaller and larger class assignments throughout the semester. The mini research projects are scaffolded replications of three of the linguistics studies. Students also choose from a subset of the assigned studies to develop an evidence-based client pitch which outlines how they recommend the client address various linguistic advertising needs. Finally, the assigned linguistics articles serve as resources for in-class demonstrations of how to contribute to Wikipedia. Students first learn how to contribute visual components to Wikipedia articles. Students then learn how to improve a Wikipedia article and support it with content from the course. By the end of the semester, students should have the skills to contribute to Wikipedia on a topic that has professional or educational value to them, allowing students to develop and demonstrate their digital literacy.
