Seems to have changed! Temporary glitch, or permanent?[edit]

I've posted this question in a few places; haven't gotten a definitive answer yet.

The alphabetization system seems to have changed in the past few days. I'm speaking of the point that lower case is alphabetized in a separate alphabet, following that for upper case. I've been making much use of that for making a lot of categories more logical and readable.

But suddenly, all of those categories have upper and lower case Sortkeys interfiled in one alphabet.

I gather that Wikipedia is installing some big change--one I do not understand. I've got a vague impression that it affects alphabetization. Is this point I've described a temporary glitch, or is it going to be permanent? 140.147.236.194 (talk) 13:38, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Stephen Kosciesza[reply]

This page contradicts some practices used in the real world[edit]

The article Alphabetical order says, for instance, that in French, letters with diacritics are treated equally to normal Latin letters, this "ô" and "o" are identical, so that "rôle" would come before "rue". Other languages may differ, but we should probably follow normal real-world practice.

Also this page says that "Brooklyn Zapruder" would come before "Brooklyn street games" and I'm not sure if that's how it's done generally in the real world? And does the Wikipedia software do that, like on a category page? I haven't checked... it probably doesn't come up that often.

This page isn't titled as any kind of rule, so editor is asking about how to name an article, and I'm telling them to ignore this page. I would think that maybe this page ought to be incorporated into our general Manual of Style system, or maybe just changed to say essentially "See Alphabetical order and use the system there for your language" or possibly "This is the English Wikipedia so we treat letters with diacriticals the same as the base letter". Pages, not just articles[edit]

In Special:Allpages etc., the namespace can be specified. The word "article" should be generalized to "page" in this page (where applicable) and its title. - Patrick (talk) 08:45, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
