Venue[edit]

We need to come up with a venue. From the emails I've gotten, it seems that the preferred places would be either near UChicago (Hyde Park) or in the Loop. I'm fine with either. Any comments? Suggestions? Kelly Martin (talk) 16:41, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer the loop, but location will not determine my attendance. Argo Tea at State and Randolph is a pretty good place, depending on how many people we have. Tedernst | talk
Anywhere near public transportation from downtown is fine for me. I'd definitely prefer to not drive into the city, so i'd be taking Metra to LaSalle street station and CTA from there. seinman 23:32, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Safety[edit]

Can minors attend meetings safely? Also, my mom's birthday is the 29th. LaleenaTalk to me Contributions to Wikipedia 22:36, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any meeting venue we use will be one that permits minors to attend (therefore, we won't be holding the meeting in a bar or tavern). Right now the frontrunner venue appears to be Argo Tea, a tea cafe in the Loop near State and Randolph. The only reason this would be bad is if we got too many people showing up; they can't service all that many people and if that happened we'd have to go elsewhere (but there are many options). The location is very close to public transit (two blocks from the Thompson Center, if I am reading my maps correctly) and is close to the big downtown Marshall Field'sMacy's at Randolph and State.
We can't guarantee your safety, obviously, but I wouldn't anticipate that there's any more danger to attending one of these events than there is in any other urban activity. The meeting will be in a highly public place so if you're concerned about undue influence, keep in mind that there's going to be lots of unrelated people around (including the staff of the tea shop) and easy escape to the streets of Chicago and the aforementioned readily-accessed mass transit facilities should you feel threatened. The tea shop is actually in the Ford Theatre Building so it's a high traffic area even on weekends. I am leaning toward a mid-afternoon or early evening (starting sometime between 3 and 5 pm), so the event will be entirely during daylight hours. Another meetup[edit]

This summer? — Dan | talk 00:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am interested. How is July?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 20:37, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You might not want to overlap with Wikimania (or perhaps you might!). Whatever you do you should probably have a date and location set at least two weeks out, since it generally takes about a week for people to notice an announcement. --Gmaxwell (talk) 20:49, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps early or mid-August, for the reasons Gmaxwell mentions? — Dan | talk 04:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe meet at the same time as Wikimania, and call it Wikimania-Lite, or some such.
I recommend we meet at the worst dive in town in top hats and evening coats. Yes, it will be quite warm. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 04:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in any case, I think we'll be needing Wikipedia:Meetup/Chicago 3. — Dan | talk 02:43, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
