WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:26, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:37, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Your comments are sought on a source list for Wikipedians.

I see that this WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement is listed as a related project for some articles on IQ testing. I have posted a bibliography of Intelligence Citations for the use of all Wikipedians who have occasion to edit articles on human intelligence and related issues. I happen to have circulating access to a huge academic research library at a university with an active research program in those issues (and to another library that is one of the ten largest public library systems in the United States) and have been researching these issues since 1989. You are welcome to use these citations for your own research and to suggest new sources to me by comments on that page. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk) 21:34, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Reorganized the Category:Orphanages

The category was getting a bit bulky, so for better org I created Category:Orphanages in Canada, Category:Orphanages in India, etc., and tied each of those into the "Category:Society of XYZ" cats for their country/region. Also created Category:Founders of orphanages. Hope some folks find this helpful. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:42, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Foster care

We have two newbies who have taken over the Foster care article in perfectly good faith, but, I believe their organization is incorrect. They are not used to high level articles/concepts, but articles, like places, where everything is lumped together. I have not been able to convince either of them. The article is seen by 500 or more people per day. This really needs some experienced editors. One isn't enough! Student7 (talk) 01:08, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Can you give a specific example? The article does look very bad.Tobit2 (talk)

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Child Trafficking

I vote to include this. I know someone who was adopted because one of her relatives sold her. There is also the Guatemala scandal which was a huge child trafficking incident that has shaped much of US and World attitudes towards adoption and laws towards adoption. Child trafficking has also been a huge problem in International adoptions. The first adoptions done internationally by Holt were shown to have child trafficking issues involved, and in fact, currently China has closed its doors several times because of these problems to the point that NPR has made news reports on it. So I'd vote for Child trafficking to be added, not because it's related, but it is definitely within the scope of this project.--Hitsuji Kinno (talk) 14:20, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Definitely. If only we could agree on a name and a logo we could start including all the relevent articles! Fainites barleyscribs 15:08, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I was going to edit the stub for Child Laundering, which can be described as using money, deceit, or force to obtain young children, who are then given separate identities to create orphans ready to be adopted. These children are then given new paperwork to legitimize these new orphans, and are taken overseas to wealthy Western countries. I was wondering if anyone had any comments or suggestions on undertaking this? ChloeCBlaskiewicz (talk) 01:47, 6 March 2012 (UTC)ChloeCBlaskiewicz

Street children in India

I am currently working on creating an article titled Street children in India. Currently, a page about street children exists, but it only contains general information about street children around the world. Street children comprise a quite large subsection of the Indian population (estimates are around 100,000) that is excluded from the mainstream social governmental structures of India. They are one of the most disadvantaged groups in the population because not only do they face extreme poverty, but they also lack strong familial ties that provide emotional support. Many studies have also found that street children in India are subject to much abuse, both by common citizens and police. Understanding why children in India become street children and what hardships they face is important for gaining support to help them and for informing approaches to improve their condition.

Not only do I feel that an article focusing specifically on street children in India is an important contribution to this WikiProject, but I also believe that more articles need to be written focusing on street children in other geographic locations. By providing accurate information about the children in different areas, light is shed on the conditions of some of the most displaced and disadvantaged members of societies.

I would love feedback and suggestions from anyone who is willing to read my article draft when I post it in my Sandbox. (I’ll add the link here when it is completed). KiaraDouds (talk) 21:58, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Child Begging

Hello all! I am currently working on an entry on the issue of Child Begging, an important issue that Wikipedia lacks extensive research on. Because many of the children involved in begging are victims of human trafficking the article may possibly supplement the current entry on Child Trafficking. The current page on Begging is notably lacking and does not at all discuss begging facilitated by coercion, so I do not think that linking my entry with this pre-existing one would properly promote the topic. The entry I wish to create will emphasize the existence of child begging throughout a number of countries and shed light on the practice as a form of forced labor. Many of the children that are forced into begging have been orphaned or abducted, which is why this entry is a necessary contribution to a Wikiproject devoted to issues regarding child abandonment and its implications. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions I would love to hear from you, considering this is my first Wikipedia entry and I have much to learn.Avo92 (talk) 22:51, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Proposal to edit the Child Laundering stub

I am a student at Rice University studying Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. I am planning to editing and expanding the stub for Child Laundering. It is not currently listed as a stub under WP:AFOD but I am proposing that it be considered for inclusion. Child Laundering could be best described as using money, deceit, or force to obtain young children, and forging new documents to legitimize these "orphans", and are taken overseas to wealthy Western countries. Due to the thousands of dollars in fees that prospective adoptive parents are willing to pay, the profits are enough for those who are willing to take advantage of the system. This is a major issue within the system of intercountry adoptions and is a subject that should be expanded upon. If any users of this Wikiproject have any ideas or opinions about how I might best undertake editing this stub and contribute to the WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement, I would appreciate the help and advice.

Guatemala

I've just rewritten Adoption in Guatemala from scratch - not only was it entirely outdated (it was from 2007, before major legal changes), but it was remarkably one-sided - it talked about the Hague Convention as "these so called reforms", entirely failed to mention the endemic corruption and abuse of process, etc etc etc.

This isn't really my field, though, and it's not much of a rewrite - would someone with more expertise care to take a look at it? Thanks, Shimgray | talk | 20:45, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Editing Suggestions to the "Child Laundering Page"

Okay......I'm an dufus and apparently I thought that I was supposed to edit your actual page. Needless to say that I was wrong, but that still meant less work for you!

Nevertheless, here were some general suggestions that I did notice while running through your page

  1. the body of your page needs restructuring gramatically to fit Wiki standards. Nothing too drastic, but something along the lines of what I did for those few sections
  2. Your references and footnotes need fixing as well. The footnotes will automatically be listed in the order you cite the article, and the reference list can just be put in bullet-style format. Again, just follow the generous example I mistakenly provided.
  3. In-text links could be increased. I'm just referring to the blue links that will redirect you to another page when clicked upon. You may want to add more on the "see also" section as well.
  4. You may want to join other WikiProjects as well. WikiProject adoption is good, but certainly there are others as well. Maybe WikiProject Children? Abuse? Crime/Criminal Activity?

Hopefully these suggestions get the thoughts flowing. As you can see, this is essentially what I left in your talk page on the article site itself. Hopefully, this larger community can see these suggestions and help you out.

Hi all, I have updated the Foster Care Independence Act page. I worked on the project as part of the Wikimedia project through an MPA policy analysis class. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jrose88 (talk) 17:24, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

I am currently a student at Rice University pursuing a minor in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities (PJHC). One of the minor's projects is to improve the quality of Wikipedia articles on issues related to social inequality. I have chosen to improve the Street Child article by creating a related article about "Street Children in Latin America." Because the Street Child article is related to this WikiProject, I thought I would post on this page to invite you all to read and possibly contribute to my page.

Street children in Latin America experience many of the issues that the Street Child article discusses. Most researchers have grouped street children in Latin America into two categories: home-based street children and street-based street children. The former refers to children that spend their days on the streets but have physical homes and families to return to--but are forced to search for work on the streets because of poverty. The latter refers to children without physical homes, children who work, sleep, eat, and play on the streets. Although it is difficult to determine just how many street children currently exist in Latin America, some sources such as UNICEF estimate that as many as 45% of children in Latin America are, will be, or have been street children at some point (home-based or street-based). These numbers are debatable, but the underlying issue of street children remains. In relation to this WikiProject, street-based street children are often orphans and/or abandoned, while both street-based and home-based street children are displaced from their homes.

Once I'm done with the article, I'll post a link to it. Meanwhile, if anyone has any suggestions for sources or is interested in collaborating with me on the article, please let me know.

Nowhere for info about Children's homes ?

I was trying to fix a link in a stub about a small children's home (which originally had a link to Children's Home, a historic building in Massachusetts). I eventually changed the link to Children's home which redirects to Orphanage, but it doesn't seem to cover the topic of "looked after children" (UK terminology: that's a redirect to the relevant legislation). Group home goes some of the way... I edited it a little to generalise it to include children, not sure whether that was wise. I'm not an expert in the topic, and any info will be very country/culture-specific, but I'm noting it here to draw to the attention of subject experts. Over to you. (The original article of concern may no longer exist: I reluctantly PRODded it as not notable, just one home for 8 children with no particularly interesting history.) Why is the Child and Family Services Review page marked as low-importance? It should be marked higher. The page is US-specific, but the CFSR process affects every child welfare system in every US state. I think the low rating is keeping editors from adding to the page, when it needs to be fleshed out. Only a few people have edited it so far, and it needs work. Waltzedout (talk) 23:30, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home

Hi. I've added Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home to the project. This is a former Mother & Baby Home in Ireland (closed in 1961) that received attention last where when a possible mass grave was discovered on the site and records concerning the deaths of 796 children were revealed. It has re-entered the news last week after it emerged that in 2012, the responsible authority had raised concerns about the illegal trafficking for adoption of up to 1,0000 children from the home to the United States. Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement/Archive 2/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Adoption, fostering, orphan care and displacement, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
