(1) it is not true that Nisba is of Persian origin. It is found in a number of Semitic languages, and Ancient Egyptian long before the Persian language existed (See Moscati, Sabatino, An Introduction to Comparative Grammar of Semitic Languages sect. 12.23; (2) it is much more widely used in spoken and written Arabic than is indicated in your article - e.g. baykawkabiyy = "interplanetary”; (3) it possibly owes its wide extension of use in written Arabic to the needs of translating Greek texts in the Middle Ages. Wikipedia Day Awards[edit]
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. The "al-" prefix, which I understand to be the definite article in arabic languages, should it be spelled capitalised or uncapitalised? For example "al-Andalus" or "Al-Andalus", the "al-Aqsa Mosque" or the "Al-Aqsa Mosque"? Debresser (talk) 13:48, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
The europeanization of the sort order of articles on individuals with Arabic names[edit]
Forgive me if this is not the right place for this issue.
I have started a lot of articles on individuals with Arabic names. Good faith contributors used to routinely try to shoehorn those names into the European convention that individuals inherit the same last name as their father, grandfather, etc.
About a year and a half ago I had a series of discussions with User:JimCubb, who had taken a lead role in improving the completeness and accuracy of talk page templates for biographical articles. As a result of those discussions we agreed that the best way to protect articles about individuals with Arabic names would be to make sure those articles had a {{defaultsort}} which was set to the current name of the article.
Recently, a month or two ago, a contributor started europeanizing the sort order of hundreds of articles. They have asserted that the wikipedia's standards require all Arabic names be europeanized.
I've looked. I believe their assertion is mistaken.
I'd welcome advice about this europeanization issue.

- Geo Swan asked me to look at this to see if it represented our discussion correctly. It does but could do with some explanation. At the time of our discussions most of the assigning of sort values was being done by bots that searched Category:Biography articles without listas parameter and set the sort value of the {{DEFAULTSORT}} on the article page as the value of the
|listas=. In order to prevent a bot from setting an incorrect sort value it is best to put the correct value as the argument of {{DEFAULTSORT}} on the article page and of|listas=on the talk page.
- I would like to know who has started europeanizing Arabic names. The guideline states that
If the article is titled "Forename Surname", the category should be added to the article as [[Category:Type X people|Surname, Forename]] (or: {{DEFAULTSORT:Surname, Forename}}) so that it will be sorted by surname.
- As most Arabic names are not in the format "Forename Surname", sorting by surname is not required. In many cases it is also impossible since the Arabic name may lack anything remotely resembling a surname. JimCubb (talk) 20:19, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I have been sorting through Category:Names trying to move everything unnecessary out of it, so that it will be a useful category. In the course of this, I came across a number of articles on nisbats/nesbats, and I have created a category for them, in Category:Human names, because I thought that would be useful. Ammar (name)[edit]
Ammar (name) was recently vandalized and fixed but I think there is still something wrong. It begins "Ammar (also spelled Ammar..." but that's not really a difference.
