Article tagging

Now that the article talk page template has been created, we need to tag all appropriate articles. User:Totnesmartin has already started doing this. We should probably tag all articles in Category:Devon and its subcategories. I'd recommend that we each do a subcategory at a time, and we announce here which categories have been done. Also, it'd be nice if when tagging articles we look through the article first to see if we have any suggestions for improvement to put in the talk page template's suggestions parameter. -Safalra 18:49, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Who's in and who's out?

I was going to tag Beth Gibbons but realised that, apart from being born here, she has no other connection to Devon. Should we tag people whose Devon-ness is irrelevant to their achievements? Totnesmartin 19:59, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I guess that depends on whether we would regard improvement of that article as helping Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to Devon. Just to make things simple I'd tag any article in a category listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Devon/Categories, with the exceptions of the obviously Cornish articles in Category:Scenic railway lines in Devon and Cornwall. - Safalra 20:30, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
There are 20 categories on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Devon/Categories that are of the form People from [somewhere in Devon]. Tagging all these people will take a long time, and many of them are only linked to these places by being born there. Therefore, I'd now suggest we only tag people whose connection to Devon is stronger than just being born here. - Safalra 20:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Parliament Street, Exeter

The Parliament Street, Exeter article needs some sort of picture, to show to fact that it is the narrowest street in the world. I would do it myself but I don't intend to go into Exeter anytime soon, so if anyone is in the area it would be handy to have some sort of picture. Birddrz 21:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Are we certain this is the narrowest street in the world? It's not the only street claiming that:

Wanted Images

This makes me wonder if it might be an idea to create a list of wanted images at Wikipedia:WikiProject Devon/Wanted images. We could group wanted photographs by area, and then a committed member of the project could take the photographs when they next happen to be in the appropriate area. --Safalra 21:51, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm working on Commons quite a bit at present. I think there are quite a few more Devon images there than I had realised although not well cat'ed (which is what I am trying to do among other things). There are quite a few images in Commons that are Devon ones that were not/are not in the category. I've added quite a few today and will continue to do so. William Bligh

Should we include him in the Project? As he was born in Plymouth, but from then on it seems his fame was more because of him being mutineered on the Bounty, what do you others think? Full article here Birddrz 23:25, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

I think we really need people to have a stronger link to Devon than just having been born here. As I've mentioned above, there are about 20 categories of the form People from [place in Devon] (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Devon/Categories for the full category list), and many of these people have little connection to Devon other than it being their place of brith. --Safalra 12:25, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Parliamentary constituencies in Devon

Greetings from the Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Parliament constituencies. I notice a constituency article has been tagged by your project. Looking at the Politics of Devon category I see that only a few Devon constituencies are currently included. I have been working on a series about the Parliamentary representation of the different historic counties which should (hopefully) provide a complete list of constituencies, with links to existing articles for them. Inferiority complex

Just a little bit of sounding off from me - yet another 'Plymouth should direct to a disambiguation page' comment has appeared on the Plymouth talk page - obviously you can laugh it off, but it does make me go 'rrrrrrrrrr'. I'm afraid Plymouth is up against various obscure American Plymouths, and they think they're more important. For me, if London, Birmingham, Boston and Charlotte aren't disambiguations, Plymouth shouldn't be. I couldn't agree more. I've just been reading the, er, North American perspective and quite frankly feel like tearing some hair out. I don't want to resort to shouting American stereotypes about them thinking they're the centre of the universe... but the attitudes expressed on that discussion page are biased to the point of being xenophobic. One American has stated 75% (yes, you read that right) of people clicking on the Plymouth page would not wanted to have gone there. Argh. Okay. Rant over. Suriel1981 07:13, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
This one continues to bubble - there's a related straw poll in the Worcester talk page. I almost don't want to be a part of something that insists that an important location has to be relegated to among all its namesakes basically because of a lack of imagination on the parts of the people who founded them. Also, more fundamentally I feel it comes down to a sort of isolationism that US citizens never have to learn about anywhere except their own country. I don't think the main argument can be won, but there is a new slant on this when it comes to something called primary topic. They argue there is a lack of primary topic for Plymouth. I think the Charlotte argument should apply for that, as clearly Charlotte refers to a girl's name. I can accept Charlotte as a city article, as that has more scope for an encyclopedic article and I genuinely don't have a problem with it. See my comments above on the apparent US attitude. Very few (any?) regular contributors to the page in question, or to WP Devon, have appeared at the discussion - maybe they won't be able to add anything. In fact, now 'extended discussion may be evidence of lack of primary topic'. Priority articles

I don't think WikiProject Devon is big enough yet to institute an assessment division, but I do think it would be a good idea to produce a list of high priority articles that we should try to get to Featured Article status (and at the very least Good Article status) as soon as possible. People from Categories

A discussion has been opened at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London#Category:People from Ealing by district about upmerging local area categories for People from... into current local government boundaries only. This could have implications across the whole of England if carried through. Your are invited to join the discussion. South West Coast Path

There is a proposal that the South West Coast Path article should be rewritten. At present it is largely long lists of towns, villages, and places of interest. Janner - article could be deleted

The Janner article, which is a sorry little specimen, is currently going through another bi-annual deletion event. I have said Keep on the Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Janner page. There is also another possibility that it gets transwiki-ed to Wiktionary (I think I understand that).

This article, wherever it ends up, desperately needs some sources to show that it is a real term and not a neologism or other nonsense. However this does mean someone finding source material (maybe in a library or bookshop). I'm stuck for inspiration at present.

Now that the article has survived (Just - No consensus is nowt to celebrate) we shouldn't be complacent; some articles get the AfD process a second time because no improvements were made. Plymouth

There's much indignation in Talk:Drake Circus and Talk:Drake Circus Shopping Centre: a lot more heat than light. Both articles have been sprotected (not by me), but when one username emerges from a three-day block and another becomes four days old (was it?), more excited edits are likely. Perhaps somebody with access to back issues of regional newspapers, etc., could help. (Me, I'm a very long way away. And I'm pretty ignorant: I hadn't even known that Plymouth was in Devon.)

Pinhay Bay & Pinhay Cliffs

Hi, Way back in Dec 2005 stubs were created for Pinhay Bay & Pinhay Cliffs stating they are in Somerset. I was trying to do some clean up for WikiProject Somerset & was going to merge them (I put merge tags on a couple of months ago) but I can't find any record, map or whatever for Pinhay Bay or Pinhay in Somerset - the only ones I can find are in Devon near the border with Dorset, just west of Lyme Regis & the village of Pinhay - can anyone on this project confirm they are in Devon rather than Somerset & then we can edit them & you can decide whether to merge them or whatever?— Rod talk 20:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Devon Flag

Hello people - just mentioning ongoing Devon Flag issue, which we must have heard of given as it's our project symbol. There is a low level edit war of sorts occurring on the issue of whether the Devon Flag is dedicated to St Petroc. Given that this flag is an unofficial one, it could be said it can have no dedication. But then these things grow up through custom - there may not have been an actual meeting dedicating the yellow and black flag to St David, or the red and white to St George. So I'm not going to revert edits removing this factoid, but at the same time I can accept the dedication. However it would be good if there was some reasoning or citation to it, at least to dissuade the continuous deletions. As a starting point I know the poem written in honour of the flag included mention of St Petroc. The poem was taken out of the article as it is effectively copyright material. However mentioning the fact wouldn't be. Is there any other background to the flag? As an aside I have restored the flag to the Devon page. This was also deleted by an IP editor. Photographs of courts

If any Devon-based photographers could take snaps of courts in their neck of the woods (e.g. Plymouth Crown & County Court, Barnstaple County Court (the Civic Centre), local magistrates courts - there's a photo of Exeter Combined Court Centre already) and add them to commons:Category:Courthouses in the United Kingdom, the photographs would be very much appreciated for List of courts in England and Wales and List of county courts in England and Wales. History of Torquay

Basically I've been working on this over the past year (aside from the Early Torquay bit which is essentially a total rip from the Devon History page, with a Torbay slant) on and off whenever I've been bored, if anyone has any comments to improve it, it would be great and also proof reading, as I'm sure it'll have it's fair share of grammatical and spelling mistakes due to myself typing too fast! Museums in Devon

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Devon. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Devon navigation template

How to eat a cream tea

There is an ongoing dispute(!) at Cream tea over the "proper" Devon way of eating it - cream first, or jam first. As you can imagine, this issue arouses strong passions. I (resident in Devon for 15 years but admittedly not "local") was always told that it was essential that the cream be put on the scone first, and the jam on top. The article reflected that doctrine until the last couple of days, when a "local" editor changed it round the other way. Can the massed ranks of Devon editors come to a consensus on this? Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Plymouth railway station

I am hoping someone can give Plymouth railway station a good going over. It failed its GA assesment but some of the points raised were about style and formatting that is common in railway station articles, therefore it would be useful for someone with different areas of interest to take a look. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Devon

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. Missing geographical coordinates

Many Devon articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Devon articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 224 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Devon articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:59, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Update. Articles needing coordinates have been placed into a category. 16 articles in Category:Devon articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Devon is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:20, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Plymouth again

Just nominated the article about the largest city in Devon, Plymouth, for good article status. It might have been Greatestrowerever whilst logged out. He added it to everybody who's a member of the project (if you have the userbox on your user page it adds you to the category). I have no idea why he did it. Jolly Ω Janner 17:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Devonshire eggs

I thought I'd heard of this dish, but I may just be remembering reading about it here in 2011. I'll see if I can find any RS in my books before the PROD deadline. There's nothing in the couple of Devon recipe books that I've looked at so far.  —SMALLJIM  21:23, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
If there's any doubt, I'm happy to change the PROD to a AFD so we have more time to consider. I just tried Sodde Eggs (which seems to be Tudor Recipe which is mentioned) and rather liked them! --NHSavage (talk) 18:58, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
I didn't find any references. Brockett's Devon Union List (see here) records six Devon cookery books/booklets that were published in the 1960s/70s (and one from 1909: The Barnstaple Book of Popular and Practical Recipes by anon) and my guess is that if the name is genuine it would have appeared in one of those – not enough for notability. The alternative to PROD would be to rewrite the article and rename it as Sodde eggs which does seem to be well enough referenced and, apparently, tasty!  —SMALLJIM  10:08, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for looking. While the idea of rewriting as Sodde Eggs is interesting, its not for me and I also doubt whether it would ever really be notable and a recipe book is one of the many things wikipedia is not. --NHSavage (talk) 17:16, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
