Moved discussion[edit]

(From WP:ORE discussion.)

Are we done? I can't remember, but I know we wanted to do a DYK for April Fool's. Jsayre64 (talk) 03:14, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think that would be fun. I'm not sure about the second section. I think we should remove it. There are a couple that probably qualify, but overall, it seems a bit too WP:OR-y to me. (BTW, I know for a fact that "Bottom School Park" is a typo. I drive past it every day; it should be Bolton School Park. Sort of an embarASSing typo.) --Esprqii (talk) 21:33, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps actually says that there are both parks, right next to each other. Are you sure? Jsayre64 (talk) 04:27, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps gets its data from GNIS which is somehow quite confused. I suspect somebody typed in the wrong name one day and the rest is history. It's all just part of the Bolton Primary School campus. The place identified as "Bottom School Park" is really just a small garden behind the school. I don't know how you challenge an erroneous entry in the GNIS database but if you figure out the proper government form to submit in triplicate to get it fixed, I'll do it. --Esprqii (talk) 06:03, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and the thing labeled "Bolton Park" in Google is really Hammerle Park. You won't find Hammerle Park on Google Maps, though GNIS says it has been named that since '93. --Esprqii (talk) 06:16, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Removed from our list. Jsayre64 (talk) 16:30, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[Insert obligatory John Bolton or Michael Bolton joke here] -Pete (talk) 22:16, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've contacted Google (using the "report a problem" button on Google Maps) to tell them about their mistakes, and I've asked them to email me a response. I'll spread the news if I get anything back. Jsayre64 (talk) 21:40, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I contacted the USGS a couple weeks ago and just got an email from them saying they had fixed it in their database and that it should show up in the public search soon. Since Google gets their info from USGS, their maps will get updated the next time they refresh their map data. --Esprqii (talk) 21:35, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All right, sounds good. Jsayre64 (talk) 02:51, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They fixed it, listing "Bottom School Park" as a variant based on a typographical error. --Esprqii (talk) 21:40, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to "possible bottoms" list[edit]

I think we should delete this list, remove the obvious non-bottoms, and move up the genuine bottoms to the main list.

  • Bottom Creek (Coos County, Oregon): Looks like a bottom on the Google terrain map; add to main list
  • Bottomless Lake (Oregon): Remove. Not a bottom. (ironically, it's actually more bottom than lake; check it out on Google Maps)
  • North Fork Bottom Creek (Douglas County, Oregon): Looks like a bottom on the topo map; add to main list
  • Little Bottom Creek (Linn County, Oregon): Remove. Does not appear to be a bottom on the Google terrain map.
  • Hay Bottom Canyon (Wheeler County, Oregon): Probable bottom, add to main list
  • Rock Bottom Reservoir (Harney County, Oregon): Remove. Not a bottom. (refers to the bottom of the reservoir).
  • Rocky Bottom Reservoir (Malheur County, Oregon): Remove. Not a bottom. (refers to the bottom of the reservoir)
  • Yellowbottom Recreation Site: Add to main list

Done. But some other things to be done: once this is published, add "see also" links to this list from Oregon bottom articles. For DYK eligibility issues, let's not move this to mainspace until it's fit for DYK. Jsayre64 (talk) 05:11, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Length[edit]

And since this is a list, it looks like we're going to need more prose about the bottoms. Bummer. Jsayre64 (talk) 18:26, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
