History[edit]

On 01 March 1964, Mighty 53 was raised as a ‘Pure Sikh Regiment’ at Bareilly as a Mountain Composite Regiment (Pack) with 3.7” Howitzer and 120 mm Brandt Mortar under the stewardship of Lt Col (Later Brig) Gurbachan Singh, The First Commanding Officer. First three decades saw the unit converting from mountain pack to a Field Regiment and later into a Medium Regiment. The Unit has the honour of having handled eleven different types of Artillery gun sys varying from 3.7” Howitzer to 155mm Soltam which speaks volumes of the versatility. The Regiment has given a good account of itself in all theatres of operations. The regiment had the honour to participated with its guns in the “REPUBLIC DAY PARADE” in the year 1986. The grit, determination and selflessness of gallant Khalsa’s since last sixty years have left indelible foot prints on the sands of time. Be its operations, Aid to civil authority, sports or adventure, The Mighty Khalsa’s have lived up to the motto of the Regiment of Artillery ‘Sarvatra Izzat-O-Iqbal’ (everywhere with honour and glory).
