Planned Reorganisation[edit]

I intend to reorgnaise this category. My intentions are:

Firstly, simplify the structure -

Move all of the regional categories, eg. Category:Roman Roads in Syria and Palestina provinces, directly into Category:Roman roads. This will mean only 2 clicks to get from Category:Roman roads to any Roman Road article.

Abolish the 4 sub-categories, which will now be empty - - Category:Roman roads in the provinces - Category:Roman roads in the Eastern Empire - Category:Roman roads in the Eastern Empire - Category:Roman roads in the North African provinces

Secondly, remove all duplicate category entries. Articles will be in their regional sub-categories, but not in higher categories such as Category:Roman roads.

Thirdly, remove links to articles which are not about Roman roads, such as History of Palestine and History of Syria. The category structure will then contain links to specific roads, and articles about roads, and nothing else.

Any objections or suggestions - please let me know within the next few days.

Further thoughts[edit]

The subcategory Category:Roman roads in Britannia is arbitrarily subdivided by the road name, ie. Via, Street, Way, -gate. I propose to abolish these subcategories, and group all the roads together under Category:Roman roads in Britannia. Bards 18:50, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ancient Roman roads in Rome should be a sub-category of Category:Roman roads in Italy. Bards 19:27, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The categories Category:Other Roman roads in Italy (not leading directly to Rome) - largely continuations of roads leading directly to Rome (which has a ridiculously long name!) and Category:Roman roads to or from Rome itself will be abolished, along withtheir subcateories, and all roman roads in Italy moved directly into Category:Roman roads in Italy; except roads wholly inside Rome itself, which has its own subcategory. Long-distance roads which lead to Rome and exist partly in Rome will exist in both the main category and the sub-category.

This may not be perfect, but I'm keen to get working on this and it will be a big improvement to the existing structure. Bards 19:27, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The category Category:Roman waystations in England will be renamed as Category:Roman waystations in Britannia, to coincide with Category:Roman roads in Britannia. Bards 19:56, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorted[edit]

All done, except -

  • Roads within Naples and Rome are not listed under Italy aswell.
  • Articles about Roman Provinces and regional histories have been left. Not sure whether to remove them or not. They are useful there.
  • Roads which cross 2 or more regions are listed in all of them.

Rewrite[edit]

Would it not be better to recategorize these roads based on the historic references? Such as sing names and borders of roman provinces rather than modern countries? -- Cat chi? 12:31, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, Roman provinces makes more sense. Or at least Roman geographical regions, but please no modern nation-states. As is, "Germania" is wrong as it commonly means "Germania Magna" - which was not part of the Roman Empire. --ZH2010 (talk) 18:18, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Just checked wikimedia.commons and Category:Roman sites, and they all use modern states throughout. So if that is carried through everywhere, that may be more straightforward. Eighter way, it should be consistent. --ZH2010 (talk) 18:25, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
