The lion rampant is from the royal arms of Scotland and represents King James I (1406–1437). The crescent moon represents Peter de Luna who as Pope Benedict XIII issued the bulls of foundation in 1413. The gold diamonds on the chief are taken from the personal arms of Henry Wardlaw, Bishop of St Andrews (1404–1440).
