Fret-King is a British company that specializes in the manufacturing of stringed instruments and musical accessories. Established in the early 1990s by guitar designer Trevor Wilkinson, the company has gained recognition for its electric and bass guitars, which predominantly adhere to traditional design principles. Drawing inspiration from iconic 1950s American models like the Les Paul, Stratocaster, and Telecaster, Fret-King instruments often feature unique pickup configurations and Gibson-style hollow bodies.[1] However, the company has also produced instruments with more unconventional designs.

In 2008, ownership of the Fret-King brand transitioned to John Hornby Skewes and Co. Ltd. (JHS), a prominent musical instrument distributor based in Garforth, Leeds.

Throughout its history, Fret-King has collaborated with various artists to develop signature model guitars. Notable musicians who have endorsed Fret-King instruments include Jerry Donahue, John Etheridge, Gordon Giltrap, John Verity, John Jorgenson,[2] Elliott Randall, and Danny Bryant.[3]

Among the artists who have publicly supported Fret-King guitars are James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, Parker Lundgren, Gavin Coulson of Oliver/Dawson Saxon, Jeff Brown of Cats in Space,[4] and Andrew Pipe of The Mentulls.[5]

In 2018, Trevor Wilkinson ended his affiliation with JHS, marking a significant transition in the company's leadership and direction.[6][7][8]
