Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose (Private) Limited (KGTML) is a company which operates a bulk and general cargo terminal on the East Wharf of Pakistan's Karachi Port.[1][2][3]
Background[edit]
In June 2023, AD Ports Group was granted a 50-year concession agreement to develop and operate a container terminal on the East Wharf of Karachi Port on berths 6-10 under Karachi Gateway Terminal (KGTL).[4][5] In October 2023, AD Ports Group was awarded a second concession to develop and operate a bulk and general cargo terminal across berths 11-17 under KGTML.[2] Collectively, AD Ports Group has operational control of a consolidated 2300 meters of quay wall on the East Wharf of Karachi Port.[5] These concession grants to the AD Ports Group come after an inter-governmental arrangement between the Governments of UAE and Pakistan.[6][7][8][9]
Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose (Private) Limited[edit]
KGTML is a joint venture between AD Ports Group, as the majority shareholder, and Kaheel Terminals of the UAE.[5][10] It was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan on October 18, 2023. It operates a bulk and general cargo terminal across berths 11–17 on the East Wharf of Karachi Port under a 25-year concession.[2][11][12] The general cargo operations primarily handle steel, paper, and clinker, while the clean bulk terminal handles grains and fertilizers.[2] KGTML operates along 1,500 meters of quay wall for general cargo and bulk operations.[1][5][13]
Mr. Khurram Aziz Khan is the current CEO of KGTML.[14]
Development and growth of Karachi Port[edit]
AD Ports Group, through KGTML, announced it would invest $100 million in the project [10] [15] An investment of $75 million is planned within the first two years of the concession.[2][16][17] [18]
KGTML plans to upgrade the infrastructure and the superstructure at the bulk and general cargo terminal. The investment aims to enhance efficiency and capacity by 75%, enabling the terminal to handle up to 14 million tons per annum compared to its current 8 million tons per annum.[2][10][19] [18]
