"Black comedy"? Not really[edit]

It doesn't seem fair to call After Life a "black comedy[-drama]", IMHO. Black comedy creates humor by treating morbid and morose topics casually, ignoring their solemn nature. Death and grief are some of After Life's central themes—but it doesn't treat them casually. Quite them opposite: The comedy occurs in spite of them, as the characters struggle to find ways to bring humour and joy back into their lives. I'd simply call it a "comedy-drama"—putting "comedy" first because Ricky Gervais is known primarily as a comic. (I stand by this opinion even if the production company itself calls it a "black comedy". WP should be about accuracy.) – AndyFielding (talk) 07:58, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have to disagree. The definition of black comedy is simply “ a type of comedy in which tragic or distressing subject matter is dealt with in a humorous way.” That’s exactly what the series does with suicide, depression, and death as a whole. The subject matter doesn’t need to be treated casually or offensively. Something like “Friends” where they get locked on a roof or someone gets a bad haircut is simple comedy. There are no jokes or light-hearted takes on suicide. “After Life”, regardless of the overall intent, does joke about these subjects and that fits the simple definition of black comedy. There are plenty of sources that note the series as black comedy as well, and these are what we need to go by, not personal opinions. NJZombie (talk) 18:36, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
