Controversy[edit]

In regards to the controversy section I believe it does not quilify as credible. It points to a internet forum. While I understand that there is not many articles on this show pointing to forums for a source seems lacking and wikipedia can do better then that. I think it something that should be noted. If you google "American Pickers Controversy", there are many stories in blogs and on-line sites in addition to the History forums. The controversy has also been mentioned in a few other websites - but those websites refer to the forums. It seems that the controversy is worth mentioning, maybe as part of a "Reception" section, but I'm not sure really where to reference. Controversy sections in general are a sign of poor writing. Nothing negative is worth mentioning unless it can be well referenced to reliable sources. Random websites and blogs are not reliable sources. I love the show, but there is nothing in the article that isn't simply PR for the show. It is clear that the "free-styling" is at least partly mythological. No way they simply pull off the road and find a guy who has 2000 oil cans, 900 robots, and 42 Cities Service signs. Not every week. Some details about how the actual production is done over several days at each location would be a useful supplement to the superficial description given here. It doesn't need to scream FAKE! It's just a TV show, but some background information should be given. For instance, it's clear that Frank has his own business, separate from Mike's, as does Danielle, and that all three are playing parts for the show. Real-time filming of both parts of cross-country phone calls must either be faked, or they must have crews filming both home and road constantly, which isn't likely. Wikis for Mike & Frank ?[edit]

Okay, looking for some opinions here. Do you think there is enough notability now (show is now a multi-season hit) to warrant creation of individual Wikis for Frank and Mike. Right now, their names simply redirect to the A.P. Wiki. I've found some good info online, interviews and profiles, that could be reliable sources and I'm willing to create them. Waddaya say folks? Antique Archeology[edit]

I was thinking of adding a new page (or a section) about Antique Archeology, considering the actual business is little talked about on the show (locations of shops, business practices, who manages them, items of special significance etc). I'm talking about the actual business, not the show. The actual website of the shop is available (Google it), and has no connection with The History Channel, I assume because The History Channel isn't interested, they just want their show. It even has a "press" tab in which various reputable interviews (NY Times etc) are linked for easy referencing of Wikipedia additions. Any thoughts? Hi Samantis, I'm one of those (some say heretic) inclusionist who believes "the more the merrier" when it comes to Wikipedia articles, but I'm just not sure Antique Archeolgy could meet the notability standards for a stand-alone Wiki. The Iowa location does serve frequently as a backdrop for the show, and perhaps the Tennessee location will in the future, but otherwise on their own the stores aren't that well-known. In the past others had put in some work on stand-alone articles for Mike, Frank, and Danielle only to have the "notability snobs" delete them. I'd say a subsection within the American Pickers Wiki is your better option for getting the info included. Just my thoughts. I'm sure others may differ. Have a great Wiki kind of day! Great! I am new here and am just learning, but I appreciate your constructive criticism very much Sector001! Definitely a 'happy' on the feedback today. I will look around for more info before I add the section, and if it gets removed then oh well. It will help me hone my wiki editing skills anyway. Salvage Hunters[edit]

Accusations of Reality TV being fake[edit]

Are any points with regard to this general topic that should be included in the article? How much of the show is staged? Certainly I find it odd, that sometimes Mike and Frank are allegedly on the road, and we see both sides of the conversation, when they receive a call from Danielle, or make a call to Danielle at the shop. They make a random call, and there are cameras at the shop AND in the truck? The Sturgis episodes were suspicious to me. Mike told Rick Dale to lower his $25,000 estimate to $17,000 on the restoration of the Indian motorcycle. Rick Dale puts in a lot of sweat equity on his restoration; You just dont tell a mechanic to lower his estimate by eight thousand dollars. And we saw Rick Dale take that Indian bike out of the shipping crate. We saw a horn cover on the bike, and then we saw Danielle haggling with sellers for a horn cover. So all those scenes about the horn cover seem like staged scenes, considering that I saw a horn cover already on the bike. Some other observations: We dont see Mike with a notepad writing down his purchases; We dont see him pull out the cash, or writing a check. We Always see mike as the final decision maker on all the huge purchases. And camera crews really stay behind to watch Frank and Mike drive away from a sellers property? Really? Then the camera crew catches up with Mike and Frank down the road someplace? A lot is staged. The deals might be real; The sellers are real; You cant fake three television seasons of barns stuffed with antiques and junk. ...then theres the episode where Danielle went to New York on vacation. Doesnt she have a husband and kids? She went to New York by herself? Really? ...And I think the biggest mystery is when they allegedly had no lead, and they were allegedly freestyling. How do you freestyle a picking trip, when you have camera crews following you? It seems to me that a camera crew has to know where they're going. Other than a general diatribe against the show I'm not exactly sure what point you're trying to make. If you feel there should be a subsection about the "staging" or fakeness of American Pickers then provided you can include reliable, neutral sources for your information and not just original research and opinion, well then by all means add something to the article. I'd advise you to read through some of our basic style, neutrality, and other rules first though. Otherwise whatever you add might not stand up to administrator scrutiny and be deleted. How is that a "diatribe against the show?" huh?? I was citing examples from the show which might support the rampant accusations that the show is fake. Did I attack the show? I wouldn't be surprised that there are some semi-preplanned items. The phone calls could be set up at set times so they can record both, plus they probably record continuously in the van. When they freestyle, they may re-enact the initial contact after getting approval from the person, and putting a wireless mike on them. What you see on the air may not be exactly in time order, but rearranged for many reasons. It's not and I don't consider it 100% reality, but more of a travelogue/documentary. The van[edit]

Just to be clear, it appears they have made a marketing deal with Ford (note the many commercials during the recent episode) and appear to have a pre-production full-size Ford Transit van. This is NOT the same as the Ford Transit Connect, which is smaller and has been available in the US for several years. Being a European type design, they all tend to look very similar to US viewers.
