How I came to start this article...[edit]

I was doing some research on somebody who was a critic of the wikipedia. A site took me to a white-supremicist site. One commentator on that site said something like: "stupid liberal wikipedia, it has lots of articles about crap, but it doesn't even have an article on Andrea Amati, inventor of the violin."

A web search confirmed some serious scholars did attribute the invention of the modern violin to Amati. Well, even a stopped clock is correct twice a day. So I started the article. Geo Swan (talk) 06:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From three strings to four?[edit]

I'm not sure how the following cited quote:

   Two violins, attributed to Amati, dated 1542 and 1546, were reported during the 19th century to have been converted from three strings to four, but there is no proof of this.

... can be used to support these sentences in the present version of the article:

   The violin-like instruments that existed when Amati began his career only had three strings. Amati is credited with creating the first four stringed violin-like instrument.

The first sentence appears to be a leap from hearsay of an unsubstantiated 19th century report to it being held that the report is true. And the second sentence lacks any citation at all. Or am I overlooking something? Simões (^talk/_contribs) 10:02, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
