Notability?[edit]

Does he really meet the notability criteria in WP:ACADEMIC? Looks marginal to me. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 21:18, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On notability:[edit]

1. The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.

I didn't list his citation count or number of high impact factor papers as this seemed irrelevant, but he completed his PhD in < 3 years and is one of the youngest and most successful senior lecturers at a world renowned university.

2. The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level."

There is a list of his awards on this wikipedia page. They are all at a national / international level. It is not trivial to get an RAEng fellowship.

His citation count looks below the level we would normally consider sufficient, but not far below. Most of the awards aren't really prestigious enough to count, though the IOM3 silver medal might be. At the moment there's a lot of puffery in the article, and at the very least it needs a good trim. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 18:29, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your advice Jonathan. I think the prizes and fellowships do warrant notability. Also, in the general notes on WP:Academic, it explicitly states "...Some academics may not meet any of these criteria, but may still be notable for their academic work. It is important to note that it is very difficult to make clear requirements in terms of numbers of publications or their quality: the criteria, in practice, vary greatly by field. Also, this proposal sets the bar fairly low, which is natural: to a degree, academics live in the public arena, trying to influence others with their ideas". On an 'inclusionist' note, I would appreciate your help on the 'puffery'. /jesswade88

I have deleted the most egregious puffery and highlighted the only thing which arguably makes him notable. I have also added citation needed tags for facts with no sources. You should probably take a look at WP:BLPSOURCES. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 11:54, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is also concerning that the original pages for Jess Wade and for Ben Britton were each created by the other person. That is a breach of Wikipedia guidelines surely? 79.78.157.140 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 11:20, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

His name is Thomas Benjamin Britton (professionally know as Ben). But a vandal reverted it back. 85.255.232.197 (talk) 18:50, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please could the article creator Jesswade88 declare here whether or not they know Ben Britton personally and, therefore, if they have a conflict of interest? I very much appreciate their contributions here but feel it would be in the best interests of wikipedia if there is a COI that it is declared and where possible if they could then refrain from further editing this page. Best wishes, Polyamorph (talk) 09:56, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Polyamorph, when I created the page for Ben Britton I only knew he that he was a colleague at Imperial who had won awards for research and engagement. I have since become his friend, but only did one minor edit to add his current research theme. I have never been employed by him and do not think there is anything impartial here - the awards and fellowship are all highly competitive. Would declare a COI if I were to start his page now. Extended content
In fact you have twice removed notability tags from this article, in November 2018 [1] and in January 2019 [2], despite your now-declared COI, and the fact that User:BenBritton created your own page, Jess Wade. You really should have left that to a less conflicted editor. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 19:24, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jonathan A Jones, I appreciate the time you take to check the notability of academics from Oxford. I did leave it to a 'less conflicted editor', only no one made any contributions or changed anything, so I added a few sentences. Let me know where it sounds in anyway 'conflicted' and I can remove those parts - or you can? How is it different to you editing your own page? And how does my position differ to the person who started your page, from an IP address/ non wiki account, but located in Oxford andclearly with an association to the university (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/163.1.240.50). Finally, how does Ben's medal from the IOM3 compare to your Marlow medal? As far as I am aware, they are both for outstanding contributions to a research field. That implies to me you must both be worthy of a wikipedia page? Jesswade88 (talk) 19:17, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - someone has incorrectly changed this page. I went to Magdalen College School and then to St Catherine's College Oxford (for my undergraduate degree and post graduate degree). Evidence that I am an alumn of MCS, and that I went to Oxford for my UG, can be found here https://ow.mcsoxford.org/file/mcs-documents/Old_Waynfletes_Magazine_Issue_37.pdf on page 23.
