"Hey", indeed! Bonny's frustration with Rackham

Hey, indeed! What happened to one of the most colorful vignettes in the pirate canon - that of the quick-tempered Bonny's becoming so incensed with the inebriated (or hung-over) Rackham and his male crew and guests for cravenly leaving the defense of the vessel to her and Mary Read, that she emptied two pistols blindly into the hold where they had fled? (This, during the action against Barnet and his crew, which resulted in Bonny, Read, and Rackham's capture.) Is this just an unverified romanticisation? If so, it's a real shame.

Incidentally, I agree that the article's primary listing should be "John Rackham," "Jack Rackham," or (my personal preference) "Calico Jack Rackham" and that "Calico Jack" should redirect there. The current situation is a bit like having Norman Schwartzkopf redirect to "Stormin' Norman," Robert E. Lee redirect to "Marse Bob," or Charles Lindbergh redirect to "Lucky Lindy". However, I'll leave it to those more deeply involved in the article to take that action, if they think it's warranted.D.Helber (talk) 14:38, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Red Rackham

"Calico" Jack

I think the article needs to be renamed "Jack Rackam" or "John Rackam," with Calico Jack as a redirect. After all, Calico is just a nickname. If no one minds, I'll change it. --Joseph Leito (talk) 00:04, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Calico Jack is the most common reference today. I'd use John and Jack Rackham as redirects, particularly "John," as that's the name used in the published trial record Vincent pearse (talk) 14:10, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

This stub on Calico Jack Rackham contains information on his takeover of Charles Vane s command which is contradicted inthe stub on Charles Vane I do not know which stub is correct but obviously one or other needs changing

Tintin's Search for Calico Jack's Treasure

In Hergé's two Tintin albums, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure (which form the basis for Steven Spielberg's 2011 Tintin movie), the search for the treasure trove of Calico Jack (played by Daniel Craig in the 2011 film) is one of the main plots. No, Hergé’s character is not “Calico Jack” Rackham, although an article on his mistress Anne Bonny in Dimanche-Illustré of 27/11/1938 brought the name “Rackham” to his attention. In his book “Tintin, Haddock et les Bateaux”, (pp. 34, 35, Éditions Moulinsart 1999), Yves Horeau, who had access to Hergé’s reference archive, says that Red Rackham is a composite of Jack Rackham, Lerouge (the Haitian pirate), and Montbars the Exterminator, the last of whom provided the reference for Hergé’s character’s extravagant costume. Place of birth

The main text says that he was born in Jamaica, the information panel says that he was born in Bristol. Which is right? This needs to be more clear.

Plus we get the suspiciously exact date of 21 December 1682 (in Bristol?) as against the later statement that "he was ... born in Jamaica around the year 1682" (my emphasis). Idontcareanymore (talk) 20:20, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Notes & Refs

I began to remove someone's COI self-promotion and every time I did I would get more cite errors...and then more...and then more. Using layout guidelines, proper citations, and good examples would help. I've gutted the refs for now but will address rebuilding them to standard wiki formats and improving them starting tomorrow unless someone wants to take a crack at it before then. Name

According to the sources found, his name was "John Rackham". Whilst the spelling of the surname could be disputed (I have seen a source using Rackam without the h) he certainly was not called "Jack" :) I don't have time to fix it, however. --Errant (chat!) 00:42, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

"Jack" is traditionally a nickname for "John" so it's certainly likely that someone called "Calico Jack" was really called John, and as you say most of the references call him that. Samatarou (talk) 21:28, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Someone had mixed up Rackham's crew with the visiting sailors. I fixed the two sets of crew. The visiting sailors were 9. Calico Jack's crew was 11- Anne and Mary, Jack, and 8 other crew as listed. King's Pardon

The article states that Rackam claimed the King's Pardon, but the dates don't line up. The terms of the King's Pardon (http://actionspast.com/Portals/0/Documents/KingsPardon_PageSize.pdf) state that pirates had to surrender before the 5th September 1718 to qualify.
