First Chinatown, Old Chinatown[edit]

I don't often her the present-day Chinatown referred to as "old Chinatown" - though I understand the use of it on this page given that there's an east end Chinatown, Agincourt etc. Usually it's still just called "Chinatown" or sometimes the downtown Chinatown when distinguishing it from other ones. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Docere1 (talkcontribs) 06:40, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Largest Chinatown in NAm[edit]

The vancouver page says vancouver has the second largest chinatown in NAm. Xoliswa 15:56, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering, how does one quantify the size of a Chinatown? Randwicked 16:47, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I always thought the largest was San Francisco Chinatown, but apparently that was surpassed by Chinatown, Manhattan, which was surpassed by Flushing, New York. --Vgedris 14:42, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A bunch of poppycock. Neither Manhattan or Flushing has surpassed that of San Francisco's old or new Chinatown in size on in historical importance. The propaganda of the New York yahoos will have you thinking otherwise. They'll argue that slavery never existed in the deep south because there weren't any African-Americans down there, and people would believe them. 67.115.155.107 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:51, 19 March 2010 (UTC).[reply]

All this talk about New York and Flushing surpassing San Francisco's Chinatown is nothing but pure propaganda nonsense. They try to dis-credit SF Chinatown's historical importance, which can never be denied. If you were to look up "San Francisco" in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, it states that Chinatown is the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. Similarly in the World Book Encyclopaedia 2010 Ed.: "Thousands of people of Asian ancestry live in the crowded Chinatown area. The area includes one of the largest Chinese communities outside Asia. Colorful shops, restaurants, and other buildings with Chinese-style upturned roofs stretch for eight blocks along Chinatown's lively Grant Avenue." Here's what the same publication says of New York's Chinatown: "Residential and commercial neighborhoods lie to the north and northeast of the Civic Center. These neighborhoods include Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Lower East Side. Both Chinatown and Little Italy have some of the city's oldest tenements. They also have many restaurants that specialize in Chinese or Italian Food." Nowhere does it refer to Chinatown as being the "largest", "one of the largest", "moderately large", "somewhat large", or "large" of any kind, nor does it say anything about colorful shops and buildings with Chinese-style upturned roofs that run for many blocks. IanEddington (talk)

Like the world city article, it's all based on subjectivity. If you're from New York City, of course you'll say Manhattan's Chinatown is the best and largest (no one likes to see their city as second-rate). If you're from Singapore, you'll boast Singapore's Chinatown is the largest, and people from London will claim their Chinatown is the greatest, and so on and so on. Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia. At least not yet. A resident of NYC will downplay the historic value of San Francisco's Chinatown. As an example, see this edit of that article [1]

To determine the size of Chinatown, probably look at a couple of factors, including the amount of businesses, number of blocks a Chinatown comprises, and population as well as overall influence it has on a particular city (Chinatown is the tourist and cultural selling point in San Francisco). One should probably examine how new secondary "Chinatowns" in other inner-city districts or suburbs are affecting size and influence of an old urban Chinatown.

"Highway 7, and the List of Chinatowns"[edit]

I've renamed the "Richmond Hill" Chinatown as "Highway 7 (Richmond Hill and Markham)" since the eastern and southern portions of "between Bayview and Warden" are in Markham.

This stretch of Hwy 7 is 6 km long, and it's hardly a "continuous Chinatown," so I'd like to hear from someone that believes that this should be classified into two distinct Chinatowns if they have any evidence with them. Someone who worked on the List of Chinatowns article either believes that they ARE separate entities, or simply went along with the format of listing them by municipality even when certain Chinatowns grow regardless of municipal boundaries. That being said, I should probably check that list again as well... (The Lake Effect 08:20, 21 August 2006 (UTC))[reply]

GTA Chinatowns[edit]

There is currently not enough material for the other GTA Chinatowns to merit their own article, so for the time being, we should include all their information here.

Of course, Toronto downtown's Chinatown will be presented first. GoldDragon (talk) 18:22, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The information is already contained in articles on Agincourt, Toronto, Markham, Ontario and others. The name Chinatown refers to the neighbourhood in downtown.. Toronto is hardly the only city with Chinese communities in the suburbs. See the format used in every other Chinatown article on Wikipedia, notably Chinatown, Manhattan, Chinatown, Los Angeles, California, Chinatown, Vancouver, Chinatown, San Francisco, California and many others. Suburban "chinatowns" are mentioned in their respective articles. There are no Chinatown articles that list every suburban mall together in one article, which is confusing and not relevent to the subject of the neighbourhood itself. Until there is a consensus otherwise, we should stick to the original format for now. Jphillips23 (talk) 20:05, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed?[edit]

The statement that street names are Cantonese based is tagged citation needed. This is idiotic. No one is going to ever find any references to this but any Cantonese person from Hong Kong can tell you this is obviously true.—Al12si (talk) 06:47, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
