Added pic of the square, but removed link to a separate page for the square alone. It hasn't even got a stub, and I don't know that it even needs a separate entry when this page hasn't even been filled out yet. Same with Kingsland Basin - I would suggest here that we have a stub just for 'Kingsland, London'. With the growth along the city corridor, a lot of people refer Kingsland as an area - this page could include Kingsland Basin. Tarquin Binary 21:00, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DEE BEAVER?[edit]

COME ON IS THIS A JOKE?! ITS FRENCH, "DAY BOO-VWAH", OR AS NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS WHO LIVE THERE CALL IT, "DEY BOO-VWAR"

I agree! But again, have a different pronunciation. My parents lived in De Beauvoir Road in 1939, I went to school round the corner in Culford Road, so the name was often used among family, friends and neighbours. Sorry I don't know the phonetic script, but can say that to my knowledge the common pronunciation was/is Der Bow-vee-yer (bow as in ribbon, not bowing down). Emphasis on the bow.Kathie01 (talk) 22:40, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

As the area was originally developed in the 19th Century for the Upper/Middle classes I would have thought they would have used the French pronunciation (bō-vwär' / Bow-vwar). How do Hackney Council pronounce it? Randomdaftname 22:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the local bus services pronounce it as, Bow-vwar (bō-vwär), when going past De Beauvoir Road. Cocodude (talk) 16:52, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Changes[edit]

Improvements to the article are welcome, but they must accord with reality and not push a certain PoV. Kbthompson 18:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Beaver[edit]

Useless article and even categorized under "low-importance" Let's delete it!

Pronunciation is WRONG[edit]

Given as [dē bō-vwär'] - I take it this means /di: boʊ'vwɑr/, dee boe-VWAR. Do locals really say /di:/, as opposed to /də/? Why is the /də 'bi:vər/ pronunciation not mentioned here? Is it completely out of use now? Lfh (talk) 10:22, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I live a mile from this place and the locals never say " di: boʊ'vwɑr ". This pronunciation is only used by a few outsiders who have moved into the area or people who have never been there and are trying their best to say the name as written. The name for the district is commonly pronounced by the local people as " də biːvə " literally, "d' beeva". This is because the place is a largely deprived, inner city area. Very, very few people in De Beauvoir Town learnt French at school and subsequently they do not recognise this as a French word nor know how to pronounce groups of letters in a French way. Hence is it pronounced; " d' beeva ". The local Londoners in this district of Hackney typically speak either a Cockney or an Estuary English dialect or variations between.

Frankly, anyone who was not in a City wine bar who pronounced this place " di: boʊ'vwɑr " would be either misunderstood or laughed at. Please change this article so it tells the standard pronunciation first. James Frankcom (talk) 08:50, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

De Beauvoir is one of several old French names that have been current in English for hundreds of years. Along with Beaulieu and Beauchamps these names acquired anglicised pronunciations long before they were often found in written documents. Consequently Beauchamps is often pronounced Beechams, Beaulieu is usually pronounced byoo-lee, and both Beauvoir and Belvoir are often pronounced beever. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Romit3 (talkcontribs) 12:59, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
