New Shows[edit]

Our family loves the show Deadliest Catch!!!!!!! And we have been praying for Phil.....Would love to know how he is?? And the boys,,,,see if their still hanging in ?? Everyone misses the show,,,,,where are you guys,,,we miss the different ports and people. Our son is 8 he adores yall's shows,,he keeps asking mom ,dad where is the Fishing boat movies,you know the one where I (Kyle 8) eat the crabs they catch,,,I just looked and was amazed.Your his crazy guys from tv. Why no anti-slip?[edit]

I don't usually watch this, but I find it remarkable to see some bozo captain laughing while his guy is sliding all over deck between a winch in operation and the edge of the boat. Can't they put down some kind of anti-slip strips on the deck like people put in bathtubs? Wnt (talk) 17:26, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am simply guessing, but as a veteran of some getoffs from motorbikes over the years, it hurts a lot less to slide than BOUNCE. If it were practical to use an effective antislip, you might find that the men and equipment would be more likely to tumble end over end, as opposed to sliding. In a 40 foot sea, you would probably find that anti slip decking would not be anywhere nearly horizontal for half the time...

Rationale for material I have added[edit]

Here are my specific issues with some of your edits:
  • Suggesting that Phil Harris wouldn't have been allowed to fall asleep if a cameraman was in the wheelhouse is speculation, IMO.
  • The additional paragraph on interactions between the camera crew and the fishing crew seemed to be commentary, again IMO. That whole section could probably be tightened up.
  • I question in the current season whether Phil Harris can really be considered captain for a boat that never leaves the dock.
Again, this was my impression of the edits and why I reverted them believing them to be commentary and speculation. This is a community effort and I have no desires to start an edit war over it. Coffee[edit]

Phil Harris was selling coffee under the brand name "Deadliest Brew" from June 2008 or so until recently? Blends included "Deck Hand," "The Greenhorn," and "In the Trough." I agree that it's notable. I added it to the "Criticism and controversy" section, under the "Reception and achievements" slot. If one thinks otherwise, please discuss before reverting edit. Neither incident is related to the show itself; each involves the cast members not the show. Also, the references cited make no criticism of the show related to these people. The first makes no mention of the show; the second simply states the person involved was on the show. Exactly TreyGeek, that's pretty much what I stated in my original edit summary. Geeky Randy, you'll need to show that the series has been itself criticised or negatively impacted if such information is to go into the article. As it stands, there is no place for this information here. Just because something is factual or notable doesn't mean it *must* be included in an article. So instead of revising it to meet the necassary standards, you just omit it? One of the articles was in the Associated Press, therefore people will come here seeking a link to that. Perhaps TreyGeek makes an excellent point in saying that criticism is misleading, and therefore it should be revised and put into a more appropriate section. So, where do we put it? Or, as you stated User talk:Huntster there is no place for the information here, how does one go about making the information appropriate for inclusion in the article? Certainly the information can be adjusted to meet the article's standards and I'm happy to take on the assignment if we can come to an understanding. Thank you. In order for the information to be added to the article you would have to show that the information is relevant to the show. How does one of the cast members being accused of bank robbery become relevant to the "Deadliest Catch," the show? How does one of the cast members being accused of animal abuse become relevant to the "Deadliest Catch," the show? Remember that this article is about the television show/series. Biographical information about the cast of the show would belong in a separate article about that person (assuming that person is WP:notable enough to have an article). --TreyGeek (talk) 23:49, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I would go further and state that neither of these individuals are notable enough to warrant an article here...Deadliest Catch certainly hasn't made them notable, and given the large number of people who are charged with crimes in the U.S., that doesn't immediately grant notability either. Randy, as an aside, I hope you don't see this as some effort to suppress this information. The big problem that Wikipedia continues to suffer is an over-abundance of trivia and tangential information, exactly like this, which makes it significantly harder for "non-expert" readers (as opposed to we editors who might be more capable of distinguishing such info) to actually get useful information out of the articles here. — Huntster (t @ c) 00:12, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Recently died" tag?[edit]

Since there is no individual article on Phil Harris, would it be appropriate to place the "Person who has recently died" tag on this article? Also, we need to be careful about our facts. I just corrected an error in the footnote that said Harris died due to complications related to the health issue he had during Season 4, when in fact it was due to the stroke he suffered in late January of this year, per news reports. Having said all this, given that the main fishermen have been now starring in an internationally broadcast series and have developed fanbases, I think it's time to consider individual biographical articles. I would say no. That tag would be more for a persons biographical article. I have added a 'red' link to Phil Harris (Captain) as there is already a Phil Harris who is a musician. Can't comment on his notability. Filming Phil Harris after stroke[edit]

The new CNN/People article on Harris indicates that he gave permission to be filmed after his stroke (I added this to the article, with source). I still don't believe details should be included in this article, especially now that he has his own. At the risk of sounding callous, it feels too much like trivia, considering we don't typically add such details of production. I agree and I removed it. For now, I think the article should stick to just the seasons shown, because we have no idea how the producers will handle the situation. This article is about the series as seen on TV, so should stick to just items seen on the show so far. Vessel Appearances in Other Media[edit]

Was just watching a special "top 25 moments" episode of Man vs. Wild, and just realized that the fishing vessel the host leaps onto off of an iceberg is the F/V Alaskan Leader, the same vessel seen in season 6 of Deadliest Catch requesting Coast Guard assistance when one of her crew suffers a heart attack. "Angling personalities" template relevant to this article?[edit]

I respectfully submit that it isn't, at least the upper section listing a variety of names of individuals associated with angling, commonly known as the practice of catching fish or sea life with a hook and line; I'm hard pressed to remember one instance in which any of those names were even mentioned in the show itself. The show's inclusion on the lower part of the template frame almost seems an aside when the other shows (which deal with "soft" fishery for sport or subsistence) seem so incongruous to the show's content; it's more documentary than instructional-program. If that template is to be retained, might I suggest possibly considering adding the two lobster programs ("Lobstermen: Jeopardy at Sea" and "Lobster Wars") to it as well? --Guillaume 69.174.146.134 (talk) 16:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recruiting/casting greenhorns[edit]

Format: Phrasing?[edit]

Is it just me, or does the Format section read a bit like an advertisement for the show? Some of the phrasing in it seems more appropriate for someone trying to sell the show than write an objective article on it. Just thought I'd solicit opinions before making any edits. Error: Crosslink[edit]

I noticed an odd error - in the text of the article, reference 8 (USCGC Acushnet), (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadliest_Catch#ref_8) - is shown as reference 9 - at the bottom of the section, it's properly shown as ^8. When did filming start?[edit]

I've been watching season 5 and I've noticed that the Trailblazer is not included.[edit]

The page section which includes fishing vessels with camera crews states that the Trailblazer is included in season 5. I have watched almost all of season 5 and I have not seen any scenes including the vessel. Could somebody please give me more information? Accolades?[edit]

I found some more accolades I could add to the awards section. Would a table summarizing all nominations and wins be useful? It seems there is quite a long list of just Primetime Emmy Awards (51 nominations with 16 wins already). Should a new page be created to show all accolades found? Crew lists[edit]

Redirecting all FVs to this page[edit]

There are a lot of fishing vessel articles that do not meet the Wikipedia general notability guideline that would be better suited as redirects to this article. Rather than taking all of them to AfD, I was planning on being WP:BOLD and redirecting them all to Deadliest_Catch#Current_fishing_vessels or Deadliest_Catch#Former_fishing_vessels as appropriate, but felt that consensus through discussion should be established first to avoid headaches later. Slight-Oppose: Qwaiiplayer I'm not too sure I can agree with some of these as the FV Cornelia Marie, FV Northwestern, FV Time Bandit, FV Wizard are four vessels that have been main stays on the show for years, but when it comes to notability, the FV Northwestern seems to fit that category as the boat also appears in other media, i.e. Cars 2. The others, I can understand, while I hate to see the articles deleted, but I think the FV Northwestern needs to stay and be further developed as it is the only boat that has been in all 17 seasons. @Neovu79: It needs to meet the general notability guideline, which means significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. If you can find 2-3 reliable sources that are independent (i.e. not from Northwestern Brothers Marketing) that provide more than just a passing mention of the ship then it should be enough to meet the notability standard.
