Present/Past tense

Anyone up to fixing the tenses in the article? It starts in Present tense, but by the ned is speaking of Mr Murphy in past tense, and I had to verify from the top opf the article that he hadn't passed recently? --131.207.161.152 14:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Under the sequels section the information is not correct. Sylvester Stallone has appeared in 5 Rocky sequels and 2 Rambo sequels, so he ties Eddie Muurphy's record.

I make it a POINT to mention it when an individual is an African-American. As an African-American, I feel it's important to make that distinction. The fact of the matter is I don't know a single black perseon who refers to themselves as simply an "American" in a day-to-day context. I myself NEVER do. Given the still persistent practice of stripping black accomplishment from European/neo-European accounts of world history, or, when omission is impossible, shamelessly whitewashing the facts, the importance of noting someone is an African-American/black assumes added importance. Hell, we've STILL got so-called "educated" folks walking around who have no idea that ancient, dynastic Egyptians were blue-black with nappy hair. I'm putting it back in.

Funny how people think acting like folks are "color-blind" is the answer to everything. SEEING color is sometimes the antidote to the poison of racism. If I were writing an article on Freddie Prinze, would I omit/delete the fact that he was Latino? Hell, no! deeceevoice

Not necessarily. (What kind of comments were you epecting?) I know any number of white guys I'd listen to before, say, a Clarence Thomas or a Ward Connerly. Being black doesn't immunize one from being a grade A ignoramous/azzhole. But I get your intent. So, I guess the "African-American" stays then (at least for now). The United States is 80% Caucasian. If an American is non-Caucasian, their article should therefore inform the reader of their hertitage. It's not neccessary to identify a white American as a "white American" because, by default, an American is presumed to be white. And the fact that many of the noted people with articles are African American or Asian American is an important part of who they are and what they did (eg. Martin Luther King, Jr and Rosa Parks) --b. I don't think this should be about race - but about ethnicity. For example, under someone who is of Irish or Swedish descent it should say an "Irish-American", "Swedish-American", etc. Therefore someone who is of African descent should have "African-American". Looking at this whole thing as black/white isn't nearly as accurate or useful.

Charlie Murphy

What's up with the multiple references to his brother? I mean, I like Chappelle's Show as much as the next guy, but who actually cares that he's Eddie brother? The other way around, it makes sense, but...

I believe that E. Murphy also produced "The PJ's". This was an animated TV series that was short-lived (unfortunately).

Notable Role

Considering the box office takings of Dreamgirls and cross comparing the popularity of Beverly Hills cop and Coming to America with Dreamgirls contradicts mentioning his role in the movie as Notable. Cut Info/Major edit needed

I removed this unsourced tidbit from the opening:

In a 2005 poll to find The Comedian's Comedian, he was voted amongst the top 50 comedy acts ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.

Nowhere in the article or references could I find a source listed for this and without even a group ID for the poll, it is the worst sort of unsourced item.

I think it's being kind to call this article as presently written "B-Class." While it's not written in a overtly fannish manner, it is still so rife with unsourced statments that it reads like a pedantic teen's English paper. Considering the subject's status in the Entertainment world, it's pretty surprising it is so poor in references.RoyBatty42 16:56, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Upcoming Projects

I would like to know this too. The Irish due to English pressure on the country, it would have been extremly unlikely that they would have had slaves. Up until the 1800s the Irish were effectively slaves in Ireland not even having the right to vote or even own horses amongst other things - no joke. Where does Shaquel O Neil come from too. Me thinks there must be a connection between the Irish. Its particularly prevalent in New York Africans-American-Irish.

The whole Irish slave thing is not taught in any of the schools. There is a big attempt to white wash this entire issue. As an Irish person myself, this whole idea makes me sad and uncomfortable. ___________________________

Murphy is an Irish-Catholic surname-- a non-Southern usually non-slaveowning surname, usually not associated with the Scotts-Irish in the American South:

There were many Irish-Catholic slaves in the Carribean who married heavily with African slaves. So if Murphy has any Carribean heritage he could have Irish ancestry.

Also Murphy is a an Irish-Catholic name and there were very few Irish-Catholic's slaveowners (most were Northern immigranst who were in poverty during slaveowning times and did not own slaves).

Irish American slaveowners were usually Scotts-Irish instead-- and Murphy is not usually a name associated with the Scotts Irish--

Chances are he's got some direct Irish-Catholic heritage somewhere in his past-- an Irish-Catholic Ancestor who married an African American descendent of slaves.

By the way-- the Irish-catholics were pretty much slaves in Ireland (and the Scotts Itrish were the slave-owbers). So it's likely that this was a marriage of a former Irish slave (or decendent of Irish slaves) who married a former African American slave or descendednt of American slaves.

Despite the barriers of racial prejudice-- such a marriage would be two people who had discrimination against their people in their own heritage. However, Irish former slaves faced less discrimination in the United States because they were White and race prejudice continued as a problem in the U.S. long after slaverly ended, whereas Irish-Americans were not subjected to race-prejudice for as long.

Birthplace

Almost every other bio of Eddie puts his birthplace as Brooklyn, NY, not Midwest City, OK, as is currently stated on this page. I would tend to believe that, since if his father was really a transit cop, it would be pretty hard to be employed by Oklahoma City's nonexistant subway system. Not Neutral

After reading Preview, I did not even want to read the rest of the article about Eddie Murphy. Obviously whoever wrote this did not write it from a neutral standpoint using statements like "to claim the throne as history's #1 all-time box office movie star". That is a matter of opinion and sounds like bragging (not neutral). Only the actual facts should be stated. The rest of the article is also written in much of the same language and this article is not a good read for a factual account of the star "Eddie Murphy" who I personally have nothing against. I enjoy his movies which is why I went to read the article but I dont like to read someone elses opinion praising someone, I just like to read facts!

Other examples of statements include: "and was one of the most popular cast members in the history of Saturday Night Live", also opinion. "Murphy performed an uncanny impression of Stevie Wonder", uncanny? More opinion. "Former SNL writer Margaret Humphert has said Murphy and Bill Murray are the two most talented people in the history of the show". WHERES the citation on this? "and when adjusted for inflation, remained in the top 40 highest-grossing movies of all time as of 2005" who but a super fan would bring out such a fact? "but Murphy was for the most part left unscathed since the entire weight of the movie wasn't on his shoulders" yet MORE opinion, give me a break!

This article should be completley rewritten from a neutral writers point of view. Take out the praising and unecessary adjectives which make the writer sound biased. As an example, read an article like Bill Murray. All that is stated are facts, nothing more, nothing less (although this aerticle is lacking citations). Nobody is bragging on Bill Murray as most articles in Wikipedia are written from a neutral viewpoint except when a super fan or group of super fans writes an article on someone.  I agree that it is definitely not a neutral article, why isn't it tagged?

Eddie murphy has also been nominated many times for razzie awards but these nominations are barely discussed or mentioned at all. I know the razzies are dumb awards to begin with and they are kind of a degrading award to recieve or nominated for but this article should feature nominations such as this. It is good to show the ups and downs of an actors career, especially to make it neutral. If one person thought this article isn't neutral than that isn't an issue but if MANY people think an article isn't neutral, then it clearly isn't. Missed Abuse

Somehow someone has either popped this little bit of trolling in after the lock or did it before and it wasn't notices.

From 1989 until the mid 1990s, box office results for Murphy's films dropped, hitting a low point with the critically panned Beverly Hills Cop III (1994),[18] a movie Murphy was very lame would ultimately denounce during an appearance on Inside the Actors Studio.

The last sentence in the "Stand-up Comedy" section states: The stand-up shows Delirious and Raw have been recorded and released.[when?]. This should be changed to...

Eddie also released two stand-up specials. Eddie Murphy Delirious was filmed in 1983 in Climax, Michigan. Due to the popularity of this, he then released Eddie Murphy Raw in 1987 and was filmed in the Felt Forum section of Madison Square Garden in New York. Raw has a box office total of $50.5 million.

That's an interesting point you bring up. The Coming to America article has more information regarding this. I've removed the "unsuccessful" language, because while successful from a legal standpoint (made clear in the Buchwald article), it was unsuccessful from a financial standpoint (made clear in the Coming to America articl). Missing Film

IFabibo du eumelkopf can remember going to see a movie in the early eighties called "RAW". It was Eddie Murphy doing stand up. It played in movie theatres. And I think it was a huge hit. Raw was a stand-up show that had limited theater release - which while unusual, is not unheard of nor does it make it a "film." Kevin Hart did the same thing with one of his shows earlier this year, last year Kevin Smith did a live broadcast of a QA to theaters across the US, and various stage performances (especially Cirque) get recorded to broadcast in theaters every year - I would be hesitant to call any of those items a movie/film. What the sources say is what Wikipedia says. The source used states:

"Back in 1997, Eddie became a late-night talk show punch-line after undercover cops pulled him over for picking up a transvestite prostitute."

This is what the article states. If anyone wished to take up issues of "misgendering" then they need to take that to the source, not accuse me (or anyone else) of "transphobia" or "misgendering" - nor is anyone "charging" anyone with anything. It is NOT "reversion abuse" to remove claims that are not supported in the cited sources.

• I have removed the passage and will presently be posting to WP:BLPN to get some more eyes on this. The content in question has two refs. The first ref (NYT) does not support the wording in its entirety (only the part about the being stopped by the police, not any effects resulting from the incident) and the second one (LA Times) doesn't appear to support it at all. Furthermore, the first source only makes a brief mention of the incident in passing, hardly focusing on Murphy at all. So let's review: While it's verifiable that he was stopped by the police, there's been no evidence shown of an arrest (so why this section title?) and no evidence shown that it created any personal or professional problems for the man. Somehow, being stopped by the police doesn't seem like a noteworthy occurrence for an encyclopedia article. Gee whiz, throw a prostitute into the mix, and make it a transvestite one, and what there is is lots of lurid tabloid fodder. But Wikipedia isn't a tabloid; it's an encyclopedia. Damaged eye?

I looked up Eddie here on Wikipedia specifically to see if there is any information about his right eye having been injured or damaged at some point in his life. It seems to always be half closed, even back in the SNL days. Anyone else notice that? I remember him discussing a fight somehow involving Danny Terrio in one of his stand up routines. But I've never heard anyone mention his droopy right eye.

I was also curious about his arrest with the transvestite. What happened with that? Did he ever explain? If so, what did he say?

I believe he said that he thought he was with a female prostitute.

I listed Eddie Murphy under the BISEXUAL ACTORS category. I believe he is bisexual in that he picked up a transvestite male prostitute and yet he also sleeps with women. Sequels

Murphy is credited with appearing in more sequels than any other actor. However, there are only seven movies listed. Desmond Llewelyn, Q in the James Bond series, appeared in some sixteen sequels.

I think to be a sequel it has to be more than another in a series of films like the bond ones.At least i think the title should be similar. There have been many longer series of films than Bond by the way.

Citation #59 is incorrect

The statement-

This was removed in October of 2019 with the Baxolile as "WP is not a gossip rag". Murphy's years active info needs to be changed back to "1980–present", because he did nor retire from acting in 2012 and resume acting in 2015.
