Use[edit]

"used to cover the horse's mouth" (this version) suggests a phalera confused with a bit guard. As far as I can tell, the phalera was a harness decoration, somewhat like a concho, that attached to the harness and had some additional decoration dangling from it. Hence a typical phalera had 3 attachment points. Phalerae came in sets, often of 5. --Una Smith (talk) 23:36, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Illiterate Carters[edit]

The program 'Collectors' on ABC TV in Australia recently featured a collection of pub paraphernalia, included in this were horse brasses. The collector stated that horse brasses were used by carters as a delivery list. Brasses had the emblem of the pub on them, cross-keys, kings head, etc. and the carters would know where to deliver without being able to read.

I haven't found any references to support this but I thought I'd add it here and maybe someone would be able to provide a citation.
