Joenia spells her name with no ˆ over the "e" and her last name is spelled Wapichana[edit]

From personal contact with Joenia, as well as her own campaign website, facebook, and Instagram, she does not include the ˆ in "Joenia" and does not use the x, but rather ch, in Wapichana. I think the title of this entry should be changed. Turtleram (talk) 17:34, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Turtleram. English Wikipedia requires the use of curated secondary sourcing and does not allow blogs, social media, or sourcing with which the subject is affiliated on biographies of living people. If you have sourcing from media with an editorial board that has no relationship to the subject that confirms these changes, you may just make them with citations to those sources. Thanks! I'm a newbie. Follow-up question - does that mean if the NY Times, which has an editorial board, spells her name "Joenia Wapichana" (which it does), I could cite the article where her name appears and make the change? Or would the article or media source have to explicitly argue for a change or describe in detail why she doesn't use accents and the letter x? Turtleram (talk) 19:53, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Turtleram you could cite the alternate spelling to the NYT, but I'm not sure that it is sufficient to override the multitude of Portuguese articles that spell it differently. It would be very helpful to have the alternate spelling in the article. Right or wrong, WP policy requires us to use the most common name cited by sources and in this case, it is the Portuguese version, unless she specifically notified us that it is wrong. I am not remotely technical and am not sure what the easiest way for her to request a name change is. Perhaps @Victuallers and Rosiestep: can help? Sorry I didn't see your message earlier. If you ping me, I will always respond. If you don't, it could be a while before I see the message. SusunW (talk) 20:03, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SusunW, a +1 to your comments.
Turtleram, if the subject of a biography wishes to have certain changes made to the article about them, e.g., name spelling as is being discussed here, they could follow the procedure stated in the fourth bulletpoint here (... contact the Wikimedia Foundation's team of volunteers at ...). This doesn't guarantee a change, but it's an option one might consider. Happy editing! --Rosiestep (talk) 21:48, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Rosie! I really appreciate your help. SusunW (talk) 21:50, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IMO the NYT ref is sufficient. (maybe note the different spellings?) It may be spelled different in Portuguese, but English has its own spellings. Names certainly would be spelled differently in Chinese or Russian. If the NYT spells it that way then then the change can be made. I assume these is no ref for the current spelling. Oh and happy birthday WIR Victuallers (talk) 23:02, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
