Better description of Nielsen

Hello,

There seems to be a better description of Neisen here:

http://www.canadaswalkoffame.com/inductees/01_leslie_nielsen.xml

This Wiki description seems to miss the fact that he lived in the Yukon, Edmonton and Calgary.

fishy factoid

Born of Danish and Welsh parentage, he studied at the Lorne Greene
Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto before going to the United States.

This link goes to Lorne Greene the actor born in 1915 or so. Is this correct? Nielsen was only a few years younger than Greene and studied at a school named after him?

Just seems weird.

I'm guessing it was named thusly somewhat later on --Angry mob mulls options 16:47, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I found this website that says that Leslie Nielsen was born in 1926 not 1921: http://www.tv.com/leslie-nielsen/person/6996/summary.html --Kabe13 00:39, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Filmography

Hey all, I put the following line in the hidden text alongside Nielsen's filmography. As Nielsen allegedly has over 1500 television appearances and many movie roles over the decades, this article can not possibly hold every guest appearance, commercial narration, etc. I think we should limit the filmography to roles which have defined or influenced Nielsen's career and include a link to the Internet Movie Database for the extended list.

The text reads:

  • Note: Nielsen's complete filmography of film and television takes up 220 listings according to The Internet Movie Database, not including appearances on television specials such as Circus of the Stars, game shows such as Match Point, and documentary narration. Obviously, that all can't fit in this article without making it a giant list. As such, if you choose to make an addition, please ensure there's a Wikipedia article for that listing and that it was an influential role in his career.

Let me know what you think, but I think this will help keep the list tidy. His staring role in Swamp Fox or Police Squad was considerably more notable than a Match Point appearance, and this keeps the page looking clean.

Thanks! --Ataricodfish 19:18, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

One of his recent projects has been two series of commercials for Arizona Federal Credit Union (serving Maricopa and Pinal counties) which can be seen on their website https://www.azfcu.org/ Mortifyd 07:26, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Another fishy factoid - Forbidden Planet's plot based on The Tempest? From what I understand only the characters are based on The Tempest, the plot is very different. Something to consider changing.

The plot similarities are "close enough". The principal changes are driven by the differences in Prospero's/Morbius's personalities. WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 15:17, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
This section would also look better with the film director's name included in the table. I'll add it to my to-do list, unless anyone wants to be bold. Lugnuts (talk) 19:00, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

GA comments - on hold

There are 7 things that must pass before an article reaches GA status. I have reviewed it, and feel there are one or two items which need sorting out before passing it, although which could be easily fixed. This is a breakdown of the criteria:

  1. Well-written: Pass
  2. Factually accurate: Pass
  3. Broad: Pass
  4. Neutrally written: Indifferent
  5. Stable: Pass
  6. Well-referenced: Indifferent
  7. Images: Pass

Comments:

Although it begins well, the article needs a number of later sections, particularly "Later comedies" clarified, as they can be seen as using weasel words. Notably, the passage

"Critics panned Repossessed (1990) and 2001: A Space Travesty (2000), parodies of The Exorcist and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Both films attempted the absurdist comedy Nielsen is recognized for, but were poorly received."

needs to have a reference to a critical review and probably a box-office reference too. I have put the nomination on hold, but not failed it and will see if it has improved in seven days.

Bob talk 12:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Bob, there really need to be more sources. Of the seven sources, three are movie reviews. Most of the other sources are brief bios and all sources are web based. With such a long career as Nielsen has had, I imagine that there are some book sources as well. Try the reference section of your local library, most will have at least one published movie encyclopedia. *Exeunt* Ganymead | Dialogue? 02:44, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Hey there, thanks for the advice, all. Alas, I'm probably not going to be able to get to fixing up the article this week as I hoped to sit down and do. Surprisingly, I've had a hard time finding *quality* sources for this article (much of the movie reviews guides only have small blurbs which I didn't see using for this, and Nielsen's "autobiography" is a work of fiction). I agree that there shouldn't just be web-based sources, but that's all I have been able to locate to date. I'll have to spend a free weekend down at the bookstore and see if I can find something more helpful. --Ataricodfish 03:41, 31 August 2006 (UTC) (striking and correcting, --Ataricodfish 03:42, 31 August 2006 (UTC))

Nominated for GA

I have nominated this article for GA. I also was unable to find any book sources, and spent many hours scouring the internet looking for news articles and bios, and was disappointed to find so few. Nevertheless, I have still complied as much as information I could find about his life, so we'll see how the nomination goes. As a side note, I e-mailed a radio station to get approval to use one of their images of Nielsen, and I am just waiting for the author of the image so I can add it within the next few days to Wikimedia Commons for use on the article. --Nehrams2020 23:39, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

GA pass

Good work. Definitely. Just keep finding sources where you can (I recommend one for Forbidden Planet as a classic film) but this is superb and an enjoyable read. Alientraveller 15:52, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing the article so quickly. I've tried to find a lot of sources, but so far have had little luck. Hopefully I can find a biography eventually (I haven't found one yet on Amazon). --Nehrams2020 18:12, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Canadian-American

Just as a matter of interest - if his mother is Welsh and his father is Danish, both emigrate to Canada and he's born and brought up in Candada, why is he called a Candian-American actor? Fainites barleyscribs 11:11, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

The article refers to him as a naturalised US citizen, i'm guessing thats why he's refered to as Canadian-American. 89.241.171.153 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:20, 30 November 2010 (UTC).

The links supporting the claim were either dead links or didn't support it but this one says, 'A naturalized U.S. citizen, Nielsen has lived in Arizona fulltime for the past four years and "on and off" before that for 15 years. However, he still considers himself a Canadian.' Ericoides (talk) 05:56, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Edit request - Family Plan film link

Spelling Leslie Nielsen's Name

Everyone editing this article: please use the correct spelling of Leslie Nielsen's name. There are plenty of instances of the incorrect "Neilson" on this talk page but thankfully none seem to have made it into the article. Ivanvector (talk) 05:00, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

I already went through the various articles on Wikipedia and fixed the links that used the incorrect spelling. Fortunately there weren't that many. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:13, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Dates

Earlier today, the date format was arbitrarily changed to mdy without discussion. When I restored the existing version - in place since the article's creation in 2002 - it was again reverted. I have restored the pre-existing version until discussion completes. This is a minor point in the grand scheme of things, but the MOS is pretty clear about not flipping articles back and forth or changing from the first version without a really good reason. --Ckatzchatspy 04:50, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

WP:STRONGNAT won't apply here - no especially strong or exclusive ties to U.S. for that format. Therefore WP:DATERET would apply, meaning international/dmy format per first contributor (creator). Dl2000 (talk) 05:05, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
How does Leslie Nielsen's American citizenship not constitute a strong tie to the United States? It's true that he also had a strong tie to Canada, but Canada commonly uses both formats. How does it not make sense to use the format shared by the two countries of which Nielsen was a citizen? —David Levy 05:30, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Your reversion's edit summary completely ignored the explicitly stated rationale that Leslie Nielsen was a naturalized American. And you've addressed this in neither your second reversion's edit summary nor the above message. If, like Dl2000, you disagree that this constitutes a strong national tie, please say so. —David Levy 05:30, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
I'd argue that Nielsen is far more closely associated with Canada then with the US. More to the point, the format has been accepted for well over eight years, and there is no compelling rationale for changing it. --Ckatzchatspy 06:04, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Odd this change would happen after his death and years since its been this way. As per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Full date formatting Canada uses both ways, however the first format should remain unless there a good reason to change. As for Canadian or American ties - hes a member of the Order of Canada that he got for his contribution to Canadian culture and hes is/was UNICEF Canada spokesman. Let alone his strong Canadian ties by way of his family (he has famous relatives well famous in Canada anyways). In my view hes Canadian as Canadian can be. Many Many Many Many Canadians get American citizenship so they can pay less taxes (I do this). Moxy (talk) 07:09, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
There is no dispute regarding Nielsen's strong Canadian ties (and I'll note that the editor who made the initial change, citing Nielsen's American citizenship as a factor, is from Canada). And apart from Connormah's assertion that "MDY format is way more common in Canada," we all agree that because both styles are commonly used in Canada, neither prevails (or should be changed) on that basis.
But only the "mdy" style is widely used in both countries of which Nielsen was a citizen. If his association with the United States was as minor as you suspect, it shouldn't be mentioned in the article's lead. —David Levy 15:43, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Does this sentence make any sense?

"Nielsen's lead roles in the films Forbidden Planet (1956) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972) received positive reviews as a serious actor, though he is primarily known for his comedic roles."

His lead roles received reviews? Or did he/himself receive reviews? Would it make more sense like this:

Nielsen had lead roles in the films Forbidden Planet (1956) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and received positive reviews as a serious actor.

Just wondering. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.20.225.227 (talk) 17:58, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, your version is better, grammatically. If you want to keep the original as much as possible, you could say "Nielsen's performances lead roles in the films Forbidden Planet ...". -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 20:43, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

New image?

Would people here be in favor of featuring the main image of Leslie Nielsen as he appeared in his prime or youth, such as around the time Forbidden Planet was released? I personally think it would be appropriate, as that is a tradition Wikipedia has followed through with while concerning other entertainers, such as Michael Jackson. DarthBotto talkcont 17:33, 08 April 2011 (UTC)

I would prefer the current image as it's a high quality head-on portrait. Nielsen had a long career and he gained considerable popularity later on during his shift to comedy. It would be great though if we could get a free image of him early in his career rather than that of in a movie trailer. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 17:29, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
